THE POST OFFICE BUILDING.

The following circular has been addressed by His Honor, the Superintendent, to each member of the Provincial C.uiv:':- ---" Superintendent's Ofiice, " Dunedin, Nov. loth, 1807. '■ ',>• —lt has occurred to nio that tho New ;\»st Olfi :i! Building, which, before it is* finished, will have cost the Province between L 20,000 and 1*50,000, .might bo turned to much better account than that of a Post Office. I have therefore placed myself in communication with the General Government, with a view of ascertaining whether or not they will consent to relinquish tho building ; the result is, that it will be handed over to the Province, on condition that suitable Accommodation otherwise is provided for tho General Government departments of the Pout Ofiice, Telegraph, and Registrar of Deeds. " To erect a building adequate for these purposes will cost between L4(KK> and LSOOO. Of course this cannot be done without the concurrence of the Provincial Council, and an it ia necessary to decide upon the matter before the Council can bo convened, I have adopted* this mode of ascertaining tho opinions of tho members individually upon the subject.

"Should the views of the members of the Provincial Council with reference to this matter coincide with lay own, tho Government will tako steps at once to complete tho arrangement, leaving it to the Provincial Council to decide as to tho uses to which the large building shall be devoted.

" There are several objects to which the New Post Office building might bo applied in tho benefits of which tho whole Province would participate, "but as these will have to be determined by fho Provincial Council, it is unnecessary for n;e to enumerate them. I may, however, instance the following : —New Zealand University, Provincial Museum, Town Hall, BVee Public Library and Heading Room, Lecture and Music Hall, and a School of Mines, and Agricultural Chemistry. "1 trust that the object in view will commend itself to your approval, and that you will bo good enough to communicate to mo without delay, an answer to the following question :•—

" Will you support a vote on the Estimates for lATAW, for tho erection of a Building for Post Oflice, &c. , ■&&, —1 have, Ac, " jA*f kk Maoaxokkw, *' Superintendent."
