Lyttki, ton—October 12, Deva, brig, for Neweaatle. October 13, Wellington, from Dunedin, at 12.45 p.m.

The strong S.W. wind which prevailed on Tuesday increased to a gale during the night, and continued to blow with more or less violence throughout the whole of ytsterday, accompanied with occasional heavy Htjusllti which made communication with tho shipping a matter of difficulty. Tlio majority of the watermen's boats were double manned, anil corresponding fares charged to those whoso business called them afloat. The good holding ground which constitutes the Hafety of Otago harbor was proved yesterday, as not a single vessel dragged her moorings, nor did any accident occur. An American barque, with double topsail yards, appeared off the Heads at 7 a.m. yesterday. She had her jack flying at her foro for a pilot, but hoisted no number ; after tacking about for some tim", she was lost sight of to the northward. The barque may prove to be the Montana, from Boston, now some time due, with a general cargo of American commodities.

Tho steamer Tararua, for. Melbourne, via Bluff Harbor, and the Taranaki, for the Bluff only, took their departures yesterday afternoon, in the face of a stiff sou-wester.

Tho ships now duo from Home are the Timaru, $3 days out, and the Celocno and Chile, "5 days out. Either might heave in sight hourly. i Information has been received that the ship Hydra and barque CoUingwood are at anchor nnder the Nuggets—the prevailing westerly gales having prevented tticin from proceeding south. The announcements as to tho departure of the new steamer Wailnqui from this jKirt, have evidently bcou premature. The vcfltcl was only launched on Friday last, aud it is understood that a considcrahle amount of work has yet to be done to her. The Southland Times at Monday says:—"The s.s. Waihopai, to which much interest has of late been attached, was successfully floated off at high tide on Friday last. On Saturday steam waa got up, and during the forenoon she was put through a preliminary trial by sailing about the harbor, and afterwards went down tho river a con'sidcrablo distance. Tho little craft seemed to behave herself admirably, and, wo believe, gave every satisfaction to those most ultimately concerned. A f ter undergoing a more thorough and systematic test of her qualities, within tho next day or two she will, we understand, be put upon tho berth for Dunedin, and will be continued in the trade between that port and Invercargill." FoONDKRINO OFTIIkPI'WELI, SI.'HOO.NEK,— On the arrival of the Eliza Blanche, from Tasmania, on Sunday last, a report was furnished by Captain Young that he had seen a schooner off the Dromedary, which being suddenly missed, he supposed to have foundered, and by the arrival of the Gipsy this statement has been authenticated, aud tho vessel proves to be tho Picard, Captain Hopkins, who has arrived in Sydney. He states that on the Bth' instant, at noon, it wan found that the stormpost had gone, and he at once bore up for 1 wofold Bay, but at 4 p.m. it came on a heavy gale from the westward, which drove the schooner to sea; at 7 p.m. the wind shifted to the S.S.E., when he again made to tho southward. At 9 a. in. on the 9th, when off tho Dromedary about fifteen miles, found that the ship was settling down ; all hands were kept at the pumps, and after a hurried consultation, and 7 feet water being in the hold, it was decided to abandon her, the vessel being completely unmanageable. The crew then left the vessel, aud she foundered shortly after, and they landed at Montague Island. On tho Ilth, at noon, a schooner was sighted, which proved to be the Gipsy, from Twofold Bay, by which vessel they all reached Sydney in safety. Captain Hoskins, on behalf ot himself and crow, is anxious to express his thanks to the master, Captain Win field, for his kindness to them'while on board. Tho Picard was from Launceston on * the 25th ultimo, and had experienced heavy head winds up to the date of her foundering. — Sydney Herald, 23rd ult [The Picard was well known in the Otago trade, having made several successful voyages from Hobart Town, tinder tho command of .Captain Lewis, the present master of tho Craigellachio, now in port.
