Port Chalmers Steam Biscuit Manufactory : THOMAS TAYLOR, Proprietor INVERNESS WORKING MEN'S CLUB ffIHE Working Men's Club, opened here last J[ December, may already be pronounced a rgreat success. OJie average attendance is Sfoout 150 daily and from 60! to 10 young . men assemble every night to amuse themselves by playingat draughts, chess, and the. bagatelle board ; and about the same number engage in reading newspapers and periodicals. Thesis harmless amusements are much relished, and, compared with the public-house, snust be considered a great moral improvement In most cases it was the love of society, rather than the Ib've of drink, which, led the working men to the public-house ; and 'In this Club they have social enjoyment— Sinverßation, books, newspapers, and games— liree from all injurious indulgence or temptatetion. The habits and principles thus acquired, not only ensure respectability and comfort, bat are of inestimable importance in enabling young men to push their way in the trorld, and thus benefit themselves and their poorer relatives. There are about 400 members in the Invcr- ', tiess Working Men's Club. These are chiefly j icrneymen and apprentices. The wages of she latter are about 4s per week, and consequently, they cannot afford to pay much towards any institution of this kind. The present premises are much too high rented lor the Club to be self-supporting. What is wm'ted is a cheap commodious building, well adapted for the purposes of the Club, and tovardg thiß object a sum of LSOO has already iSen collected. About LIOO more is required before building is commenced, and this sum, it is hoped, will be contributed by the friends Ol tfee working men of Inverness, Consider- . Ing the public benefits of the institution in training up and instructing so large a body of Hvx fellow-countrymen as the 4000 mechanics ©f this town, rendering them intelligent, thrifty, and careful members of society, it is Sloped that this appeal will not be made in Tain. A town can have no more noble ornament than a race of well educated and well principled workmen. There iB already a cood library, the attendance is all that could Be wished, and nothing is wanting to insure permanent success, and render the Club selfsupporting, but that the members should ■h&ve a suitable building of their own and sit An appeal for subscriptions is now made to She employers of labor in the town, and to ail persons interested in the welfare of the /working classes. To our townsmen resident ~ls the south or abroad we would also urge the claims of such an institution on their kind consideration and remembrance of Clach■fiacuddin, the ancient capital of the Highlands. Nature has done much for our beautiful diotrict, and material improvement is Rapidly advancing, but more is still wanted to elevate the great body of the working men, ..-;, ©n whom the comfort and wellbeing of society are so greatly dependent. Donations of books for the library, pictures, musical instruments, &c., will be thankfully accepted. Subscriptions and con fcributions will be received by the Trustees—• 'Charles Waterston, Esq,,, Manager of the Caledonian Bank; Andrew Dougall, Esq., General Manager of the Highland Railway ; andD. Macdongall, Esq,, Hawthorn Walk, •Inverness. ■ Inverness, Feb. 1866. The abov« Circular has been forwarded for publication in Daaedin.
