RIFLE MATCH. —VOLUNTEERS v. CRICKETERS.

The Rifle Match, between 22 member 13 of the Dunedin Cricket Club and 11 Volunteers, took place at the Kaikorai Butts on Saturday afternoon. There were a good many spectators on the ground, and the interest in the match was kept up well throughout. The Eleven, being ready to commence first, had rather the advantage in the weather; "and, although impressed with the idea that it was impossible to win against such long odds (several good shots being in,the itwenty-two), they shot splendidly throughout; more particularly good at 500 yards,, where the marker had seldom occasion to use any other flag than the red and white. Gunner Muir making five consecutive bull's eyes, and Private W.F. Stevens and Lieutenant Hannah scoring four bulls' eyes and a csntre each. Captain Borton, on the part of the Twenty-two, led off with a bull's eye, which, coutrary to strict discipline, was loudly applauded by his team. At the 200 yards range, the Cricketer 3 headed their opponents by 53 ; at the. 400 yards range, the Eleven succeeded in reducing that number by five ; and at 500 yards their splendid shootiug reduced the balance against them by 46: their total at this range being 174 against the Twenty-two's 128—the latter winning one of the most interesting rifle matches that has taken place in Dunedin by only two points. The highest score, on the side of the Volunteers, was made by Private W. P. Stevens, who made 55 points out of a possible 60; Lieutenant Hannah second, with 52 ; ar>d Gunner Muir third, with 51. Mr G.G. Orbell (Artillery) was highest scorer on the part of the Twenty-two, with 46; Mr G. K. Turton being second, with 43;^.and Mr Ogilvie (Artillery) third, with-40. There were several gentlemen amongst the Twenty-two who. only require a little practice to become first-class shots; and we fully expect to hear of some of them anain as prize-takers in the forthcoming Rifle Association Matches which are to take place next month.

The ranges, were 200, 400, and 500 yards ; five shots at each range; class targets ; standing at the 200 yards range, and any position at 400 and 500. The following are the scores:—
