Business has opened out this week in the import markets with rather a quiet look, only a moderate amount of trade having been done tc-d.iy. Sugars have been enquired for amongst the trade ; low brewing descriptions have been placed at L 32 10.*, and good rations have been disposed of at L2B 10s. Teas met with fair attention ; a parcel of 190 half-chests good medium congous was quitted at Is 8d in bond, and a lino of low congous met with a purchaser at SJ-d. Hops have been in better demand; we hear of sales having been effected of fine samples of 1864 at 2s 1-Jd. A parcel of good shsrry, in quarter casks, has changed hands at L3s,in bond. Sales of dried apples are reported at s£d,in hond. Cundles contiuue to be mo vet oft" freely at 9^-d, in bond; and we are informed tiiat even a shade more money has alsio been paid. Enquiries for bacon are numerous, but there being little or no stock of good brands in the market, business is restricted in consequence. Cheese is likewise wanted, and for a considerable parcel disposed of, over I4d has been realised. Bottled stouts command more notice. Sales of Dunpliy's have been made at 8s Cd; seTeral parcels of Machen's have been placed at 9s 9d; Guinness'a has been sold at 10s; and sales of Blood's are mentioned at 93 9d. The improvement note I last week in kerosene oil is maintained. The shipment per City of Boston of 2100 cases Downer's is said to have changed bauds in one line, at a figure stated to be well on to 3s 10:1, since which two parcels of s(iO cases each (Cozens's), have been disposed of, and holders now ask 3s 10^d. Notwithstanding arrivals of breadstuffs from Chili, there is no excitement in the mirkot. We understand that the cargo of the Herald of Light, reported amongst the arrivals this i.iorning, was sold afloat several months ago. It is moreover reported that another cavgo, expected to come in shortly, has also changed
hands; tho price paid, however, has not transpired. The Herald of Light's dates are to 3rd Juno, and we understand that her cargo was to have been taken in at Touie, but owing to the excitement prevailing there, the vessel h-id to be loaded at Valparaiso. Freights to England were quoted 50s to 475, but there was no enquiry for charters, either for Australian or Ca!if.;rnian account.
The failure of a firm, largely engaged in the tobacco trade in Sydney, is currently reported to-day.
