The Royal Mail steamship Hero, T. Logan, •commander, having on board the New Zealand portion of the English Mai!, arrived at Pore Chalmers at 12.15 this day, calling at the Bluff, and landing her mails, passengers, and ■cargo, after a splendid passage of four days sixteen hours, from thence has had to contend •with fresh winds and thick weather, which necessitated the 6hip to be hovc-to for Bight hours. The Hero, after having received a thorough refit to her hull and machinery, was detained five days awaiting the arrival of the mail ship Jeddo. that ship having, in consequence of a continuation of strong head winds, taken seven days to complete her voyage from King George's Sound, to Melbourne, Arriving on the 15th instant, at 10.30 a.m. News of her arrival was received in Melbourne by telegram, from Adelaide, on the 12th, at 7.30 a.m., the South Australian contract steamer City of Adelaide, having made the upward voyage in 102 hours. Mr William <Jray was in charge of the mails, which, on , arrrival of the Hero, were despatched to Dun edin, with unusual promptitude, by the steamer Peninsula. As soon as the mails had been transhipped from the Htro to the Lord Ashley, the latter vessel, which had been waiting with steam up, sailed for Northern Ports. Several members of the General Assembly are passengers by her to Wellington. The ship Star of Tasmania, the first of the season's wool ships from Otngo, arrived at Gravesend on May 3rd. The Chile also from Otago, is reported as having nrnved off Dartmouth on May 23rd. The Escape arrived on May 9th. The Star of Tasmania sailed on the 2nd of February, and the Guile on the 11th.

Three vessels sailed from London for Otago 6ince last mail, the Leichardt, a vessel of 689 tons, on April 2Sth ; the Ract horse said to be of 1677 tons, on May 7th ; and the •Kadar, of 531 tons, oa May llth. The vessels loading were—at, London, the Mary

Scott, England, and Star of Tasmania; at Glasgow, the Timaru and Peter Denny.

Messrs Houlder Brothers and Co. have despatched the Andrew Jackson, Al, to Asickland, New Zealand. She carries a number of nominated and assisted passengers, Refected by Captain WV C. Daldy, AgentGeneral for the Province of Auckland, together with the first party of emigrants from tbe iron districts, for their new special settlement in the county of Monponui, Province of Auckland, to be called the Brierley Hill Special Settlement. There was also a large party of general paying passengers, -who availed themselves of the Government grant of 40 acres of land.

Messrs Laird Brothers have launched from their yard at Birkenhead, for the National Steam Navigation Company, an iron steamer called the Queen, the largest vessel ever built on the shorps of the Mersey for the Merchant Service. The following are the principal dimensions and general description of the V( , SS( .I : —length over all, about 400 feet; between perpendiculars, 3G!> feet ; breadth, 42.i feet; depth of hold, 29 feet ; tonnage, 3250 ton? ; and power of engines, 475-horse power. The accommodation for the passengers consists of some 70 first-class, cabins for wliom are in the poop and deck-house, with the sleeping cabins below. There is also space for over UOl of the emigrant class of passengers.
