Business has luon but moderately active through the veeck, and lias only been en livcnud by aa improved demand during the last day or two for a few articles for shipment. The difficulty in obtaining cartage has operated against the execution of orders for the interior. Considerable quantities of stock would have been forwarded had the THIS DAY,

mea:s of transit been more readily obtained. A little speculative enquiry has taken place, but few transactions have resulted.

Fwob.—The sale of Adelaide continues umall, and prices hardly rule so firm as at ■lie quotations for the preceding week. Sales have been made atL24 10s to L 25, on short terms, The principal transactions have been in Chilian, the stock of -which wae increased by the arrival of the Wheatland, from Valparaiso. The cargo was placed by the importers in one line, the precise price not transpiring. No other large operations in this article have been reported ; in the meantime small parcels arc going off at L2l 103 to L 22, and better sized lots at rather lower.* Sugars remain steady, with but little doing—a moderate parcel of Mauritius was disposed of by auction at fair rates; Victorian Company's No 1 white, also, English loaf and crushed, are wanted, the supply on hand having been reduced to almost nothing. Teas have not shown any alteration; the market has for gome time past been nearly cleared out of common sorts, and in consequence medium congous have been more saleable. New ales and beer, both in bulk and bottle, have again become dull, and the business doing in them is almost confined to email parcels for current wants of the town trade. No variation in rat's has taken place. A few parcels of old ales in bulk have been shipped hence, somewhat relieving the market of the shipments long on hand. In spirits rather a better tone is apparent. Small transactions in bulk and case brandies and whiskies have taken place at a shade of improvement, though larger transactions have been broken off in consequence of the unwillingness to meet the advance sought by importers, Geneva has como to hand freely, a moderate portion of the recent arrivals finding purchasers at 13s to 13s Cd. In provisions, hams and butter have been in active request; good colonial butter, in particular, has been unusually scarce, a fair sized parcel sold by the hammer realised Is 3Jd to Is4d.
