ECONOMY OF FRESH WATER AT SEA.
{To the Editor of the Dajia- Times.) Sin —1 noticed in your paper of yesterday's date .1 thrilling account of the perilous situation of the ship Elizabeth Curie, on her voyage to Hokitika ; also of the inadequate supply of water and iuel on board that ship—two most important articles of the necessaries of life indispensable on short or long voyages. In such a critical position the multitude of counsel was truly needed as the safest remedy; but I am surprised that, before hazarding the lives of so many of our brave fellows who volunteered their services to 30 for water for baking purposes, &c, that a simpler plan was not adopted for water for baking. Lower a bucket into the pure blue sea, and use two-thirds of it with onethird of fresh water, and by tlr • mode water is saved. As is well known to all, bread requires 2oz of salt to each quart of water. Necessity is the mother of invention. I was obliged to have recourse to this plan on a three months' voyage, with ten souls under my care. I found it equal to [any water; and if I had pure ocean water I would use it before any water I have had in Dunedin. If this simple information will be of any future use to the public, please insert it in your paper at your convenience. I am, &c, Economy. Dunedin, 28th April, 1865.
