DISCOVERY OF FOSSIL REMAINS AT OAMARU.
(To the Edi or of the Daily Tiutss.) Sik—You will probably be desirous o»: having the earliest intelligence of a remarkable discovery of fossil remaius in this district, made in course of excavating blocks of atone for the New Post Office in your city. The limestone stratum is, as you are probably aware, nearly horizontal, and in course of splitting off one of the blocks, of large dimensions, the skeleton,of an animal was laid bare. The vertebrae are well marked, as also the ribs and what appears to be a tail, about 4ft long, and appearing to consist of S joints; the head is not so complete, but it is in a good state of preservation, and is about the size and very nearly the shape of that of an alligator or crocodile. The block has been carefully preserved, and will be sent by the first steamer to Dr Hector, to whom a more minute description and drawing have beeut sent by this mail by Mr Campbell, on. whose property it was foundI am, &c, Chauijos Vait, Symoxds, Oamaru, 26th April, 1862.
