The total revenue received t'> day at Customs on goods passed for home consumption amounted to L 749 0s 81. the items being- Beer, in hulk, SCO cbls, Ll2 lO.s; bottled beer, 763 pals, 138 8 ; brandy, 457 gals L2U 13s ; geneva, 80 gals, 136 ICalld; ruin, 33 (rals, Ll4 .7s; wins, 93 gals, Ll3 10s ; whisky, 134 gab, L 619-81; sugar 16,830 II), L7O 7a 2<\; tea, 9201b, Lls 6a B<l ; cigars. 206 Ib, L4O 2s 7.1 ; tobacco 279 Ib, L2O 10s 61 ; drapery, L 172 Us 8d ; sundries, L 32 19s 6d. The attention of the trade has been mainl; taken up with the heavy s tie of sugars anil teas held at Messrs M'LauJrftss, Hepburn and Co's ltooms. Tbe entire caryo of the Adela, from Mauritius, was sold l>y that finrf at prioes about equal to late current values, notwithstanding that isomeof the samples were not. ihs best a'apted to our j-fquiiecueuts. Fine wliite crystals, realised L4O to L4O 5s ; second quality crystals, L3O 17s Gii to 1.39 15s ; fin? yellow counters, L 34 \ss to JL36 5i ; second counters, 1.32 IPs to L 34 10;; ration, L 29 10< to L3l 15a. The teas, fibred were not so readily taken up, although some consider able lines were placed at U Bhd 10 Is 91, in bond, for fair congous, Ettrick brand, oivl ".i !.l'l foi half-cliesta ex same sliip, duty paid. The flour remained unsold, understood to be reserved at L 25, to which limit tin bids did not quitu reach. In private trade not much has been done. First-class brands of al« aud stout in continue scarce, and light beers for t-uinmer consumption are looked after, rates in advance of our j last prices being1 readily given. Some transactions in medium congous have taken place at prices showing no reduction in values. Speculators are agiin looking for brandies and whiskies, the impression being that these articles must improve. Canteruupx.—The Press ol the 21st reports as tollows: — : In general trade there is but little to report at this time of year. Stocks of all kinds of merchandise are still large, and although there is' every inclination to force legitimate business the numerous failures of late arc making all more cautious.

The incident of the past week has been the arrival of flour and wheat by ths Orita, Oineo, and the Nymph of the Seas. Tim first lot, about 300 tons, wns purchased by Mr Lare. of the City Mills. The price has not transpired, but it i> now under 1 fferat L3O rer ton, and a further reduction is expected. We have ro report of any further sales, merchants are perhaps waiting, as it is reported that offers have been received from Australia to laud il >ur of the brands at L 23.

These arrivals offlmir hfive been a great relief to Canterbury Stocks wi r.- beginning to he inconveniently short, and many feared that our wants between this and next harvest would have to be supplied at a very high rate. Prices of new grain are already spoken cf. The general impression is that wheat wdl not be lower than 6s, and, most probably, opeti at Bs. Oats are spoken of as likely to be low, as many are still holding their last, year's crops. The demand at present i. very Hunted, and the price without improvement. Barley has be n well cleared out, and tbe constant arrivals of Kngliah malt is likely to lessen the demand next year, and although there is but little planted the pries is not likely to be high. in cattle we have no sales to report to-day. The opening of the Canterbury Stock Market, at the Agricultural nnd Pastoral Association Ground will, we hope, do away witlt th 2 nuisance of driving cattle in the town on Saturdays or any other day; and if Mr Barnard could, turn his Bazaar to an 1 qually profitable purpose it would be ib relief to the town if he would shift his sales to the new stock market.

In the labor market work appears more plentiful ; those now out of employ are mostly the sort that, will only work by compulsion.. Mr W. L». Barnard lepoitsan active demand for all classes- of horses without any material change since last (juo ations. Transactions have been larger Mian v uM. and no decline i 3 anticipated in present, prices for srme time to come. Sound, active young cart-horaea a'e in great demand as there are very few in the market. One shipment uf fifteen first-class horsrs has arrived, ex Omco, from Hobirt Town, some of which me already sold at g>od prices. Inferior stock (with whii'h the market has be.-n glutted lately) has gradually cleared (iff; Upwards of ninety horses were entered for sale today, and a greatmany were disposed of at the following rates: —

First-class draught horses from 'CO to L 75; medium do, from J-40 to L 5 5; inferior do, from L2O to L3O ; first-class -adlle and harness horses, none offering, hut in goo'l demand ; second-cliiss do, from h'2o to L 3 5; inferior hacks, from LlO to LIS.

Adckland.— -The Southern Crots of the 11th inst. reports :—

Business has been remarkably dull during the week, ai.d tliere seems 10 have been 110 disposition to buy in any quantity, cither by public auction or privately. The present uncertain political aspect of affairs has no doubt a great deal to do with it and probably tliere will be but little animation in trade until the A-sembly meets, and there is some guarantee that, the ruinous policy which is now being pursued with respect to the war will not be persist d in. The prices of nearly all kinds of imported goods tre purely nominal. Wines and spirits, and oilmen's st<;ros, are a complete druir in the market Of tea tliere have been heavy importations, so much so thnt it has liecn exportc.l rather th n sacrificed here. The market is well supplied with sugar, and a cargo of Mauritius sugars now on tbe way here will supply all wants for snrae time to come. The flour"market is exceedingly quiet, and there im nothinsr doing in it beyond purchases for daily consumption. The Mary and Edith arrived this week from San Francisco, with a cargo of whent and flour, but she bus not come to a veiy fine market, and it is probable she •nillftoon to Australiu without brealdug bulk. As wheat is worth 9.s per bu.shel in California, the present price here, will hardly pay. There is not the same tlispcsition to speculate in land as there has been. Some valuable town property was offered curing the week, but the sale was poorly attended. This is probably only a temporary depression, which will p-ts* away whe" the affairs of the province are settled on a sat (factory basi*.
