Hopper This Society was established m May, 1862, for the purpose of relieving the distress .of the poorer inhabitants ot the colony, without reference to creefl or nation. The committee haye to report that since Oc tober, 186<i, to 31st December, 1863, they have relieved an average number of 35 cases weekly. The receipts have amounted to £1583 9s 7d, and the disbursements to £1421 Is id. The Institution is now aJFo-ding weekly reliei to 40 eases, and the demands on it 3 assistance are continually increasing. The Committee, in seeking the support of Public, would ppint out that though as yet the Society is in its infancy, it has been the means alleviating a great deal of distress. The Committee have been limited in the 1 c they have been enabled to afford, by the scarci^ of funds; but they hope, under the present circumstances of the Institution, the Subscribers and the Public will assist them with the means to enlarge its useful purposes. The Committee are also desirous of drawing the attention of the numerous Subscribers and Friends of the Institution to the necessity of an I Asylum being1 erected at once, so that provision may be made for the aged and infirm, and destitute and orphan children. The Government having granted a site, voted a sum of one thousand pounds (£1000) wards this object, the Committee are desirous proceeding as soon as sufficient money can.be raised towards the erection of a suitable building, the cost of which, they have ascertained would ba about two thousand pounds (£2000)— they earnestly solicit public support for so worthy an object, feeling sure that the appeal will meswith that hearty response so generously concede*; in cases of this kind by all classes of the commwnity.
