The following relates to the conveyance of mails between Melbourne and the Cook's Straits Provinces. The letter is addressed to the '• Wellington Advertiser. "~0.5.5. Company (Limited.) Elizibeth street, Melbourne, June 13.—Sir,—1 would respectfully ask you to inform the public of the following facts : -My instructions from the of this Company through the Managers, Messrs. Cargill and Co., Dunedin, were to place our steamers so as to leave Marlborough, Nelson, and Wellington, with the English mails.^n time to catch the P. & O. Co.'s steamers here,- say to leave Cook's Strait on the 19th-one boat to leave directly with English mail onirrival. The Albion left 30 honrs after the Bombay arrived. Immediately upon receiv ing the above orders, I put myself in communicii(ion with the Honorable T.-B- Gillies, Esq, Postmaster-General of New Zealand, who happened to be here, and requested that gentleman to give me au order for the mails for your ports on arrival. After some enquiry, Mr Gillies informed me that he could not do so, as it would interfere with the present mail contracts, and that he would prefer a request from the provinces interested before giving an order. You will see by this time our ability to carry out the work, from the class, power, and speed of our steam ships Had we received the mail, the Albion would have left three hours sooner. I have the honor to bs, sir, your obedient servant, John M'Lachlan, managing agent.
