Thomas Calcutt, Esq. Secretary : W. M. Hopper.| This Society was established in May, 1862, for the purpose of relieving the distress of the poorer inhabitants of the colony, without reference to creed or nation. The committee have to report that since October, 1862, to 31st December, 1863, they have relieved an average number of 35 cases weekly. The receipts have amounted to £1583 9s 7d, and the disbursements to £1421 Is 4d. The Institution is now afiVding weekly reliei j to 40 cases, and the demands on ita assistance are continually increasing. The Committee, in seeking; the support of the Public, would point out that though as yet the Society is in its infancy, it has been the means of alleviating a great deal of distress. Ihe Committee have been limited in the reliej they have been enabled to afford, by the scarcity of funds j but] they hope, under the present circumstances of the Institution, the subscribers and the Public will assist them with the means to enlarge its useful purposes. j The Committee are also desirous of drawing the attention of the numerous Subscribers and Friends of the Institution to the necessity of an Asylum being erected at once, so that provision may be made for the aged and infirm, and for destitute and orphan children. The Government having granted a site, and voted a sum of one thousand pounds (£1000) towards this object, the Committee are desirous of proceeding as soon as sufficient money can be raised towards the erection of a suitable building, the cost of which they have ascertained -would be about two thousand pounds (£2000)— they earnestly solicit public support for so worthy an object, feeling sure that the appeal will meet with that hearty response so generously conceded in cases of this kind by all classes of the community. Subscription can be placed to the credit on the Otago Benevolent Institution, Bank of New South Wales, or forwarded to the office of the Society, Farley's Buildings, Princes street. W, M. HOPPER, Secretary.
