THE NEW TOLL GATES.
{To the Editor of the Dailt Times.) Sib—When returning to Dunedin yesterday, a', Saddle Hill. I found the toll gate had been erected, and was asked to pay what I considered: wa3 a most exorbitant charge, viz.—one shilling per horse for my team, which, consists of six horses and waggon; and.another at OargiU's Hill where- the same demand was made. On] looking over the scale of rates to be charged, I: see that for every horse drawing a vehicle with 2 wheels, 6d per horse is-the charge; but where 4: wheels, Is. Now,-Sir, Ido not sec the justice there is in this charge, as, were I to use two drays with the same number of horses, viz.—3 in ( each, I .would only be charged 6d per horse, being, one half. As the present rates of cartage are such; that we can scarcely. make both ends meet, this, additional tax on our hard earned income comes, very heavy; and surely what is law for one ought: to be for all. '. I have no doubt that on this .matter] bein<* brought under the notice of the properj party, an alteration in this iniquitous charges will be made; and lam sure, if you will only use; your powerful influence, this will be done, and; confer a great obligation on a large number of i hard-working men. ■ \ I am, &c.j Waggoner.
