THE PANAMA. SERVICE. (2o the Editor of the Daily Times.) Sir,—ln the various discussions ■which have taken place with regard to the best port, in New Zealand for the steamers of the Panama service lo call at, I have been more than surprised to see no mention made ol the bearing of Melbourne interests upon the point. Of course lam aware that so far from Melbourne having hitherto encouraged the Panama route for a mail service, she has by every means in her power attempted to prevent that route from being-used. Nor can. we wonder at her doing so. The Suez route suits her well enough ;■ by it she practically is mistress of the situation, for Sydney can ; never receive intelligence, via Suez bo early as herself,-and New Zealand can only do so through her. Were it second service established; then Melbourne may easily conceive that it is :«ore to her interest toi have a fortnightly one, via Suez than a monthly one via Suez/andl another via" Panama. Wekno^
