"CITY ENGINEER'S REPORT.

" I have the honor to-place before you a list of Public Works for 1363-4, and which should, in my opinion, be executed in the consecutive order there set down. 1 would be glad" that such order be taken into consideration by the Board prior to my submitting it to the Government, as requested. " In reference lo the state of the streets since the Board suspended the maintenance, from want of funds. I have the honor to l-eport that owing to the very dry weather which has prevailed, no great injury has taken' place, but should a succession' of two or three wet days occur, there are several places which will be nearly, if not quite impassable. The Oaversham road is amongst these the worst, It is absolutely necessary that a small staff of day-workers and surface-men be put on it at once, otherwise accidents most assuredly will be the consequence of any further neglect

' I have the honor to lay upon the table a plan ot roadway to the Southern Manure Depot, the cost of carrying out which will amount to about Ll5O.

" Tenders.will be laid before the Board this day, for the formation of Duke street, in accordance with Mr M'Giashan's proposition.

"Ihuve levds, i>hm-!, aud sections in course of preparation for St. Andrew street, from George to Leith-streets, in accorJau.ce with the proposition of Mr Carter, that is that he, and others, advance the funds to the Board, re payable within twelve months, being the same terms under which Duke street is being made. " I also have in progress the necessary drawings for the permanent formation of portions of Maitlancl, Lacs, Melville and Jones streets, including Manor Place, so that these streets may be simultaneously formed with the filling up the continuation of Princes street south, acro-s the s,wamp, under the Government»grant for the main road through Dunedin.

" In reply to Mr Henderson's motion, relative to the expenditure in "Bell Ward," I find that the actual expenditure exceeds the means placed at my disposal, and that the reason why these works remain unfinished is, that the number of" workers were, froai time to time, retluced upon the pressing representation of the Treasurer, that funds could not be forthcoming to keep up so large a weekly expenditure.
