THE LIGHTHOUSES AT PORT PHILIP HEADS.
(From the Argus Correspondent.) . ' Queensclilfe, Feb. 19. The old lighthouses at Queenseliff, will soyn be numbered amongst the thinss that were, the new lights bavins heen exhibited this evening. Tiie upper is a bright Sight of the second order, on the dioptric princifie, and will be visible in clear weather nineteen miles at sea; the lower, or guiding light, is of the fourth class, and will show red between the Lonsdale Reef and the Coivair Rock, at the entrance of the Heads; thence round to the eastward to the first two bluck buoys in the south channel the light will be bright. The night has been favorable for testing the light, as the sky was very dark, and no stars were out. Captains Ferg-uson and Nicholson went outside this afternoon in the schooner Proserpine to try its effect, and there is no doubt that on their return their report will be fasorable, as the lamps have been, burning very steadily. Masters of vessels will also, in future, have a guide to keep clear of the newly-discovered rocks outside the Heads, a lamp having bean fixed on Point Lonsdale, and illuminated to-night, which will throw a stream of light over them. This light shows green to vessels outside the rocks, and red to those inside, and is darkened towards them. A considerable number of coasting vessels have been detained here by the gale which has been blowins for the last two days, hut they have ridden it out well, most of them having two anchors down.
