NEW ZEALAND CHAMPION AND OTAGO JOCKEY CLUB RACES.

THIRD DAY. If tht)3e who thronged to the Race Course yesterday, had even had the choice of weather, they could not have selected a more lovely day. The number of persons on the race course was almost a3 great as on the first day, and considerably more than on the second. The fii"3t race, the Steeplechase, was rather a failure. Daniel Webster took his leaps well; but Birthday, who had only landed from Melbourne two or three days, would do no more than the first fence, and Falcon was withdifficultypursuadedtogotwo-thirdsround, ■when he was withdrawn. With the exception of one slight difficulty, Daniel Webster took his fences beautifully, and came in alone. The Town Plate was, perhaps, the best race of the meeting. Mormon reversed his previous defeat; Lady Bird, with her 51bs extra, only succeeding in securing third place. Instead of making the running, Mormon's jock rode a waiting race. It was not till within a half mile of home that he attempted to get to the front. The Forced Handicap produced a good race. Yonng Alma, with some difficulty, wrested the prize from the favorite, Mormon. In this race, also, Mormon did not attempt to get, to the front till near the finish. The Consolation Handicap was a gift to Partizan. Two Hack Kaces concluded the day's spnrt. There Js to be a fourth day to-day, particulars of which will be found below. To-night is fixed for the settling night. THIRD DAY—Friday, 6th March. HANDICAP STEEP LECH AS J5. Of 100 soys: Entrances sots: About four miles over such country as the Stewards may appoint. Birthday obstinately refused to take it, and finally was brought home. Falcon managed at last to get over the second fence, and then after one or two baulks got over the mud •wall. The next fence but one he again refused, "and at last he also walked home. Daniel Webster at the second fence the second time round tumbled after getting over.. His jockey was thrown off", but was not hurt. The horse broke away and it was some time before he was caught. When this was done, his jockey remounted and cantered home easily, taking the fences in fine style. TOWN PIATB. Of 125 soys: Entrance, 10 soys: Three miles: Weight for age. Ultima went off with the lead, the other horses keeping well together, except Shilelagh, who lost 200 or 300 yards at starting. At the second time round Golden Cloud went up and took the lead. Revoke also crept to the front. At the back of the course the second time, Lady Bird took the lead from the Cloud, and it seemed her race for a certainty. All this time Mormon was keeping behind, but when it came to about the last .half mile, both he and Golden Cloud made a spurt, and passed the favourite. A splendid run home now ensued. Golden Cloud tried hard, but Mormon was too much for him. Loud cheers burst forth as the Victorian horse passed the stand. Time,. 6min. 3£secs. This concluded the pi-ogrnmtue of the meeting; but an addition was made by a Hack Hurdle Race, for which three horse* started. It was easily won by an active little pony, which took all the hurdles in capital style. We were unable to ascertain the names of the horses or their owners. A strong feeling in favor of having another day's sport having been expressed, a subscription list was handed round among a few of the sporting gentlemen present, and the result was that a very fair sum was at once subscribed.
