SECOND DAY.
The Presbytery met in Committee at ten o'clock yesterday morning. A rep , r t having been brought up, it was ordered that Mr Livingstone arrange with the General Treasurer to pay to Messrs M'Naughtwi and Cameron LSO each for salary tor the past quarter. It was agreed that collections be made before the March meeting in order to defray the expenses of ministers on their arrival, and for other objects connected with church extension!
The Hey. Mr Stewart was appointed to Arrange on the arrival of probationers for their distribution amongst the vacant charge*. In the meantime he was requested to make the following appointments ■— Mr Kirkland (on arrival) to Walker street church • MrM'Naughton to East Taieri and ttreen Island supplying Walker street until Mr Will's departure for (xr at Britain; Mr Cameron, to Southland ; Mr Clirbtie, to Inch Uutha; and on the arrival of another minister, supply to be provided for Mataura and Poiaahaka. Mr Stewart was further requested to givj such advice .and encouragement to the prei-cliers as he mk'ht consider advisable.
As the result of a conversation, it was agreed that Mr Will's resignation should liot be minuted, and tlmt tho question ot the mission should be considered denovo.
Mr J. Giuies reiterated his conviction of the vituHmportance of eilbrt* being made, by the supply of ministers, to meet the necessities of the community, and the growing demands upon the Church To do this was simply their duty ; and a> lie believed thf.t mulling woul I he so effectual in securing a sum". c;enoy of ihe ii»hr. men as mi acrent fiom tiie Province; be would move as a compromise, which he hoped wouid be accepted—
" That the Hey Mr Will be appointed to visit Great Britain, for the purpose oi pleading the claims of, and securing ministers for, this church, from the Frwby terian Churches in Britain : but that this Presbyiery be not hel I responsible for any part of the expensed which shall be incurred i.y Mr Will in executing this commission—the maker of the motion taking upon himself the whjie responsibility of pioviding for the expenses."
Ti>e llev Mr Johnstonb seconded the motion. The Rev I)r B'uitsa moved, as an amendment— *• That the motion of Mr<iilries be adopted with ■this additional cLu.-e -.—That the Presbytery highly disapprove of the conduct of Mr Will at the close of the proceedings of ,a*t sitting, on the question of his mission to Britain, as an attempt to coerce the Presbytery as to its decision there anent." The ltev. Mr. JBannekman seconded the amendment.
On a division, the amendment was negatived by 9 to 3, and the motion was adopted. Th'! other business consisted mainly of matters of detail, or the partial discussion of subjects on which decision was reserved.
