LIGHTHOUSES.
{To the Editor of the Otago Daily Times.)
Duau Sir Since you were kind enough to publish my letter about lighthouses on the coast of JNew | Zealand, I hope you will not think that in this 1 pretend to dicuae "a.out the portion of them. My opinion is—that one lighb'touso is required in Auckland, wherever the Marine Bojsml pleases to appoint. and also on drier Island—the latter in order to guide ships from the south. Another light on Poitland 1 Island—able to be s«;en a good distance, would lead into Napior, an 1 also.be very near clearing a ship of the Ariel rocks lying to the north. The position coming south for a Ikdit, I think, should be where the White Swan was lost. I mean Flat Point. And the outhiug soundiuars marked on the chart, viz- : —lB fathoms decreasing to 11 about four miles off the land, shoukl have some attention paid to them. The next iv order is, in my belief. Port Cooper. A_ light on the North Head wonid help the navigation of the i.ort very materially. Had I had more time I ifhould have written you more fully, but must now conclude, remaining Yours, &c, D. Pole, R,M. s.s.s. Queen. November 19th, 1862,' Dunedin.
