Tbe Fawn, of Auckland, brings from Lyttelton a cargo of flour, potatoes, bacon, and other produce. Suiled on Wednesday List. The steamer Aphrasia, after being repaired and f.eshly painted at Dunedin, made a short trip to-day, preparatory to departure for Invercargill, where she is usually engaged f»r towingand othei;purposes. The Invercargill trade will soon befuitber accommodated by the a' rival ot the Titania, which is a sister ship to the Guiding Star, formerly the Oberon. Having stilled from Launceston on the Bth, she may be expecteel here in a few days. A large ship, wilh painted ports, has been off the Beads since Mondry evening—name unknown. Of other expected arrivals the barque William Ackers brings a freight of 70 horses from Melbourne. A succession of sma.l catastrophes occurred on Monday to the small steamers running between the Port and Duuedin. Tbe Lady Barkly was laid up, receiving repairs. The Pride pi the \arra, shortly after leaving Dunedin jetty in the morning lost her rudder, and was unable to resume work all day, her passengers proceeding in boats. The Victoria, on her se-.-ond upward trip,, also broke down near Port Chalmers, an I tlie c would have been some difficulty n shipping the mails and passengers on board the C ty of Hobart had not Capt. v 'Gill, ot the Samson, on noticing the plight of the Victoria, as he was passing down, returned to town and anticipated the wishes of the post-office authorities and agents of the City oi Hobart. Alter her mails and passengers had been brought down by the Samson, the City of Hobart sailed at six p.m., and has since had a good •'art on her passage. By our last report from Mr Scott, it appeared that the Victory was driven in shon some distance during the late heavy gales, but that she has since been moved about ninety feet, and her head canted seaward. A twelve- inch hawser ha 3 also been laid out from her starboard bow, and hauled taut to prevent her tailing off again, and, as an additional precaution, two strong spars are secured on the port side, one for ware! and the other ait, to prevent her from working inshore with the surf". She is now in a better position than she has yet been, and now awaits tlie spring tides, when Mr Scott is sanguine of being able to per her off into deep w*ter. By a misprint in Monday si-sue the Queen was stated to have arrived on Saturday instead ot Sunday. The Wonua Wonga, which arrived m auvance ot the Queen, reached the Port at 1.50 p.m. on tue same day.

New Sovamkb for the Trade between Southland and Otago. The Titania may be'expei-t^d •t Invercargillshortly It is the intention of Messrs Maniug anel Wltitton", her agents, to place hr iji the trade between here and Dunedin. if sufficient inducement is held out. Already offers have been made to employ her on other service. The Titania is a screw boat of about the same tonnage as the Gmling fc'tar. She is, however, rae>:e powerful, and tbe owners con template: fifing her up with new boilers very shortly. The withdrawal oi the vessel from the Ta-manian trade, appiars to have cau-ed some inconvenienC'.- to the inhabitants of the north-west coast. Iv reference to the subject we extract, the following from the Hobarton Mercury ofthe 21st October: "Toe Titania steamer, having been withdrawn from her sta ion, for tlio purpose of being dispatched by her owners to New Ztalaud, a communication was received yestciday by Mr Davie.-, the member for Devon, from Mr Bonald Gunn, strongly representing the great inconvenience lik-Iy to be occa-i.-ned to the .inhabitant" ofthe north west coast by the cassation of postal communication with the rest of the coiony. Unlesssome extramlinary measmes'are adopted, the only intercourse wLh Circu ar He;ad will be urn Melbourne. These circumstances being brought by the lepresentative ef tin- district unehr the notice of the Government, arrange-merits were at once ordered to be nif-ule by the Executive Council for the dispatch of a special pest niesscrmer once a week, as a temporary measure, atiet in the course of a few days further steps will betaken to prevent an important district of the colony from being wholly co ed up.'' Besides her usrfulness as a passenger and cargo boat, we e^ard it as ofthe last, importance that she be secured tor the traasport of mails. The Guiuing Star will, when raised, we aro inform: d, act in concert with hu\— I mercury Ut Titties, Novvmb r llth.

Mr Laird and the Testing op Anchors Qtkstiok —Mr Laird g.ive notice, on Friday, that he will introduce, early next session, a bill to secure the proper testing: of anchors chain cables, and ships' tackle used in tbe mere-bant service. It will be remembered lhat, though the neetl of such an enactment was fuily demonstrated bythe evidence taken by the select committee on the subject a year or two a^o, by the practice of the Admiralty, "and by t!>e-fa-1 that, in the memorable hurricane whic'i "shattered our transports in the-Black Se i in -854. not one ship of the Koyal Navy parte-1 her cables. Mr Milner Gibson opposed the motion of the 'lonorable member for Bb-kenhtiid, for the Introduction into the Merchant Shipping Acts Amendment B Ii of a clause requiring all anchors and chain cables sold for use on board British ships to be impressed witli an official proof-mark, as evidence of tneir having'been subjected to an authorized proof equal to tlie strain ap plied _ by Admiralty regulations to a'l ground tackie usee! in the Itoyal Navy. Mr Laird's proposition was approved by the owneis of more than a million tons of shipping, including all the principal mail companies, and by the leaeting marine insurance companies and fifty of the underwriters of Lloyd's ; and, considering that, it was supported in Parliament by men of Admiralty experience, like Sir John Pakingtun, Mr Cony, and sir W. Kusseil—-members of the naval profession, such as Sir Jame-s Klphinstone, Sir John Hay, and Admiral Walcott—shipowners and merchants of the standing of Mr Somes, Mr Ewart, Mr Horsfall, and Mr Charles Turner—and men practically acquainted with the na'ure of iron and tlie value of ti,e te-t pr pnsed, such as Mr Kermar.i, Mr Jackson, and Mr Oubitt—it niu^t be admitted tbat, theiugh then defeated, he ! as done well in determining to bring the matter for wai d again on the earliest uppoitnuitv.—Liverpool- A Ibion.
