The Queen steamer, with the monthly mail from the Northern provinces, arrived at the Port on Saturday afternoon. .She left Auckland at 10 a.m., on the 7th instant; arrived at Napier at 515 a.m., on the 9th, and sailed at noon on the 10th; arrived at Wellington at 4 20 p.m. on the 11th, and left at 4 45 on the 13 ; arrived at Lyttleton at 4 30 on the 14*h ; and sailed at 12 30 on the 15th. By the attention of our contemporaries, and of Captain Pole, we have complete files from all the different places. At Lyfctleton M. M. S. Harrier was lying at the time the Queen called, the object of her visit heing understood to be the purchase of the steamer Avon ; the sale of which, with that of the Planet and the Lyttleton, will deprive Canterbury of nearly all her local steamers. The Avon is understood to be intended for the Waikato river. It was not expected that the Harrier would come father south. In the Wellington Advertiser ther-s appears a letter from Captain Pole in answer to some remarks of the LyttJetou Times, with reference to the prompt departure of the Queen steamer from that place on her last trip north. Captain Pole defends the fact of having sailed so promptly though inconvenient to some, as being- highly necessary in the case of v mail steamer, and that mail already behind time —and it is certainly desirable that all promptitude should lie exhibited in advancing the English mail from port to port. With reference to the dates of departure, Captain Pole expresses himself in favor of an earlier start from Auckland, both as preventing a lengthy detention thei'e, and as securing an earlier arrival of the mails at Otago, when the day of departure for Melbourne might bx made still earlier in the month, and a further margin be given to the steamers between this province and Melbourne. The steamer Wonga Wonga reached the Port in advance of the Queen, having left Manukau on the 11th with a supplementary mail, for the conveyance of which she was specially subsidised by the General Government. From Captain Renner we have Nelson, Taranaki, and other files. The Wonga Wonga was bar bound at Manukau for four days, but was able to leave at 2 p.m. on the day stated, and, taking on the mails from the intermediate ports, was able to leave Wellington at 5.15 p. in. on the 14th. From Wellington she experienced light aii-s from the northward, and pleasant weather as far as Banks' Peninsula. Took departure from Porapey's Pillar on the 15th instant at 4 p.m., the Queen being then about three miles astern. Experienced a fresh gale from S.S.E., with a high head sea, during the greater part of Saturday night, and latterly a moderate breeze from the northward with fine weather. Arrive 1 at Port Chalmers on Sunday, having made the passage from anchorage; to anchorsige in forty-four and a half hours. She proceeds to Dunedin in th morning to discharge. Tti* Evelina Kuiter, which arrived in the evening, left Port Philip on the 7th. Had fine weather throughout. Brings a considerable cargo, chiefly bonded goods consigned to order, and to be discharged at Dunedin.
Another ue-v arrival is the small craft Redelyffe, reported as iiaviny sailed so.me time asjo. Th« Geelo»g returned fc>m the A'orth on Saturday "evening, ilii toils th-S bi%antiue Choice,-from Melbourne, at Timnu.
Tho repairs and alterations to t'-e s.s. Storm IJii'd are being quickly executed at Weliiiigtun, and she will leave nil Tuesday, the lSihinstunt, for LytteJlon and Ota-go.
