THE SHIPWRECKED PASSENGERS BY THE TAMAR.
{To the Editor of the Daily Times J " Dear Sir,—Whilst taking my post prandial-walk on the jetty on Saturday afternoon, I was struck by the singular appearance presented by several persons who had just landed from the Samson. First 1 passed a gentleman whose principal article of clothing seemed to be his red nightcap; another came up sans coat, sans—l was going to say with Shakespere—sans everything; but for the fact that I should be scarcely, correct, he had an elegant costume, consisting of two towels-a la tabard Several others there were whose appearance was of the dolefiil class. Here thought I ls,u- ,f TTtu£ y for mv friend s ! for new version of his 'Unfortunate Man." I returned up the pier laughing consumedly at the sight I had seen, and told a Inena of the scene I had witnessed. To my intense disgust he did'nt laugh 1 On the contrary he looked reproachfully at me, and commiseratingly on another of the subjects of my levity who happened. to be passing at the moment, and said "Don't you know H 1 that these poor people are the shipwrecked passengers of the Tamar, and that they have lost all. I felt considerably small, Mr Editor, and rushed home and penned these few lines, with which I enclose LI, for the purpose of starting a subscription i for these poor houseless ones. lam sure their case is a very hard one; to be deprived of all even to a change of clothes; and at the same time I feel sure that it only needs the publicity of to-morrow morning; s issue to awaken the sympathies of your readers to their cause, Touw truly, W. H.
