In the shop of Mr Jones, jeweller, Princesstreet, is at present to be seen an oil painting, which can hardly fail to be of great interest to a!l old residents in the Province of Otago. The picture represents Port Chalmers as it appeared in the old days, before the gold fields' rush had brought a crowd of sliipping into the Port, or necessitated the erection of the numerous buildings, which now make up the town of Port Chalmers. In the picture only two vessels are to be seen, one of them being the Pirate steamer, which is about leaving the Port. . - On shore the scene is equally quiet ; the wooded hills rising on every side in sereno beauty, as yet almost untouched by the hand of man, the calm sea, the calm sky, and the sylvan shades combine to make a picture of repose which well accords with the idea of what Port Chalmers was in days of yore. Of the artistic merits of the picture we feel bound to speak in high terms. The subject is evidently treated co-i amove, the painter having thoroughly imbued his mind with the idea of the stillness and repose of the secluded bay, and with rare skill transferred to canvas which was before airy thought. Tho picture is the work of Captain Kobertson, formerly of the Pirate steamer, whose skill as an artist has been long recognized in Melbourne, although we believe it lias not hitherto been so generally known in Otago.
We observe by an advertisement which appears elsewhere that the Government will be open to receive" tenders for the leasing of tho Clarendon Jotty, up to Friday the Hthiuit*
