St. Peter's Toe.—The statute of Jupiter Tonaas converted iuto St Peter, had its toe pub iuto constant requisition, as all the lower orders, and many of the higher, kissed it; and pressed it against their foreheads; all, however, carefully wiping the toe first, to preserve theirlips and foreheads from the spittle of the devout who »ad preceded them. A youn* urchin of a child was held up to kis the toe, bub he squalled, and kicked, and cried: and. notwithstanding the exertions and wrath of his mother, would not be persuaded to kiss the1 black statue's black toe. Two handsome girls, apparently the daughters of a substantial tradesman, were lugged about from slirine to shrine,- by their pious"father, kneeling and praying and at last finishing the whole by kissing" the holy foot. The j father went doggedly on, but the"girls followed', quizzing him and laughing to paoh other; and when they kneit* behindJiimj kept locking about ac the passers.-by, Instead of saying their prayers. I was dose by the statue, and'the grbaape; which'each made as the toe camVnear their'lips; and the care they took to make-believe and not touch the toe,' formed a good comment on the duty And its objects.— Duke of Buckingham's JPrfatUJDmiry. . , ( ,
