We extract the fo lowing from the Argus] 2oth October : — The Fccond public sale of wool for t! c season was held today at Messrs J. II C ouglmud Co.'s ware bouses, am) was fully attended. Upwards of 1,000 bales were submitted, and about; 500 weie sold. For the greasy and scoured sorts there was a fair competition, but a large portion of the fleece wool was withdrawn, the growers' limits being above the prices offered ;■. • Business has again been limited in extent. The demand for horse feed remains very brisk, and prices etill looking up. Colonial oats are entirely out of first hands; Californian have been disposed'of at 9s per bushel, and maize at 6s 6;l,- but.is held for higher races this afternoon. Messrs Fraser and Cohen offered a parcel of 750 bags slightly damaged No. 1 j Cossipore sugar, which was bought in, but subsequently sold, the price not transpiring. They also placed, on the Australian .Wharf, Patna rice, ex Marie et Nelie, at LlB 10s for slightly, and Lll for heavily damaged, for net cash ; alsol at Hughes's Wharf, ninety cases half-pound dark tobacco ; and at the railway platform, twenty-eight half tierces twist, with all faults, at fair prices, considering the condition of the tobacco, i ■ ■ ■ ■ ■
In the stock and share market, the following sales are reported by the brokers of the Stock Exchange : — Victoria Government debentures, Six per Cent:, IOSh ; National Bank of Australasia, Li Is ; Bauk of Victoria, L3o 10;; Melbourne- Railway debentures, Eight per Cent., 101; Catherine Reef Mining at 7s 61; Hustler's Reef Miuing, at 2^ 6d. A half-yearly general meeting of the shareholders of the Colonial Bank of' Australasia was held to-day, at which a dividend at the rate of ten per cent, per aunum was declared. The meeting was held with closed doors, as is the custom at this establishment. The reports of the proceedings are supplied by the directors, who, with t^e management, are responsible for their accuracy, and tor any omissions which may occur. The profits for the half-year are set down at L 49,844, the expenses at L 12,332. A balance of L 18,761 is caiTied to the contingent account.
The Age of the 25th says :— The import market h>is been very quiet to-day, and no transactions of any importance have been reported, merchants having been chiefly occupied with the preparation of their correspondence for the outgoing mail. In another column will be found our usual monthly summary of the month'- transactions.
Messrs Fraser and Cohen sold by auction, this day, at their rooms, the residue of the cargo of tea, ex Overmann :—Congous at from Is 8d to Is 9}<l. The same firm also sold 35-4 bags of maize at 0s 3d per bushel. Messrs Greig and Murray sold to-day, at their rooms, the cargo of Fiji produce, ex Friends, at the following prices : Cocoanufc oil, L 33 !oitoL37p<r ton ; tortoise-shell, 15s per lb ; also, 200 crates sodawater bott'es at 20.? per gross. NE^Y South Wales.—We {Age) have our files from New South Wales to the 22(1 inst. The 8. M. Herald of that date has the following:— Messrs W. Dean and Co held yesterday an ext°nsive sale of wines, spirits, beer, &c, on account of Mcssw Scott Henderson and Co; there was a good attendance of the trade, and for many ot the parcels there was li.ely competition. The following were the rates obtained for the principal items ; -Ports (Offley's well-known brands), Cs 9d to 17s in bond ; brandies, low, 4s 0.1 to 7s GJ ; Martelt's, 123; champagne, 03s to 40s; bottled beer, quarts. 9s to 9s 6d ; pints, Cs 6d. To-day, the same firm offered for saie, ou nocouufc of Hemy Moore, Esq., the cargo of Manilla sugars ex Amalia: the attendance was numerous, and the greater portion of the cargo was placed at slightly improved rates ; also coffee, at 8d ; Java rice, L2l, A meefcinjr of the creditors in the estate of Messrs. Wittkowski Brothers, tobacconists, of Collins-strjet, was held on Tuesday afternoon. The embarrassment which caused the meeting appears to have arisen from large ' speculations* in tobacco.
