DUNEDIN, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 31
The official Eetums of the Customs llevenue, and the value of the imports and exports of the Colony for the quarter ended 30th June, have just been published. The results are exceedingly satisfactory, and show what immense progress in prosperity the Colony continues to make. The total Customs revenue on imports collected at the various ports of the Colony, amounted to £87.942, against £.55,226 during the corresponding quarter in 1861, being an increase of £32,616. Of this amount the Province ot Otago contributed £36,699 against £8,888 during the corresponding quarter in 1861, being an increase of £27,811. Auckland contributed £18,365 against £18,330 during the corresponding period in 1861, being an increase of £35. Canterbury contributed £12,315 against £9,413 during the corresponding quarter in 1861, being an increase of £2,902. Wellington contributed £8,345 against £7,814 during the corresponding period last year, being an increase of £5-31. Nelson contributed £6,121 against £5,162 during the corresponding Quarter in 1861, being an increase of £959. Southland contributed £2,457 against £1,266 in the same period last year, being an increase cf £1,191. Marlborough contributed £470 against £341 during the corresponding Quarter last year, being an increase of £129.
The relative positions of the various Provinces, in respect to their Import duties for the Quarter stood as follows, viz.:— Otago £27,811 Increase. Canterbury .. 2/JO2 do. Southland.. .. 1,191 do. Nelson 959 do. Wellington .. 531 do. Hawkes Bay .. 25"J do. Marlbrough ... 129 do. Auckland 35 do. Taranaki 1,107 Decrease.
The increased vitality of the Middle Island Provinces is very remarkable, and forms a striking contrast to the small progressive rate of the Northern Provinces. The decrease, in the ease of Taranaki, may. be partly attributable to the fact of the withdrawal of a large portion of the military force from New Plymouth, causing, consequently, a less consumption of duty-paying articles. It is difficult to account for the very small increase exhibited by the Province of Auckland, unless the comparative cessation of immigration may have caused it. The chief source of Revenue was spirits, which produced £39,469. Measurement goods produced £14,714 ; sugar, £9,1G7 ; tobacco, £6,279; wine, £4,530. The other items of Revenue all exhibit a large increase, but do not call for particular mention..
As a natural contingent of increased Custdras' revenue, the imports of the Colony show a large increase in valued The total value of the imports into the Colony during the Quarter was £976,518, against £484,762 for the corresponding Quarter in 1861, being an increase of £491,756, Of the total importations, Otago imported goods to the value of £391,456, against £77,344 during the corresponding period in 1861, being an increase of £314,112. Canterbury imported goods to the value of £130,332, against £120,109 during the same period in 1861, being an increase of £10,223. Southland imported goods to the value of £57,280, against £20,978 duriug the corresponding period in 1861, being an increase of £16,302. Jfelson imported goods to the value of £94,327,. against £46,830 during the corresponding period last year, being an increase of £47.497. The relative positions of the various Provinces in respect to the value of their imports during the Quarter stood as follows :—■ Otago ... .. £3H,112 ...Increase Auckland .. ... . 63,439 .. kelson .. ... 47,497 (Southland 36 302 Wellington... .. . 15^715 ... ", Canterbury ... 10,223 Hawkes'Bay ... 3,040 Mnrlbrough .. 2,^369 ..." " Taranaki .. ... 871 _ Dec ' reage From the above table it will be seen that the value of imports did not bear the same proportion to the customs duties throughout the several Provinces. Otago maintains of course its position, but Auckland, which is second on the list in the increased value of its imports, is only eighth in the increase of its Customs duties. Nelson is third on the list in. the increased value of its imports, and fourth in its increased Customs' Duties. Southland is fourth in the list in the increased value of its imports, and third in the list in respect to its increased Customs' Duties? Wellington is fifth in each list. Canterbury, which is sixth on the list in the increase of its imports, is second in respect to its increased Customs duties. Hawke's Bay which is seventh in the increased value of its imports, is sixth in its increased Customs' Revenue. Marl borough, which is e'ghth in the increased value of its imports, is seventh in its increased Customs Revenue. | Taranaki exhibits a decline in both cases. I
The exports from the Colony for the Quarter amounted to £662,177, against £229,299 during the corresponding Quarter in 1861, being an increase of £432,876. Otago's exports amounted .to £397,699, against £35,159 during the corresponding period last year, being an increase of £362,540. Canterbury exported produce to the value of £113,903, against £91,669 during the same period in 1861, being an iucrease of £22,234. Wellington exported produce to the value of £60,199, against £50,025, in the same period in 1861, being an increase of £10,174. liawkes Bay exported produce to the value of £24,007 against £241, during the same period last year, baing an increase of £23,766. Nelson exported produce to the value of £17,911 against £7,712 in the same period in 1861, being an increase of £10,199. Southland exported produce to the value of £7,506 against £4,723 during the corresponding Quarter in 1861, being an increase of £2,783. Tarauaki exported nothing, against £334 worth in the same period last year. The relative positions of the various Provinces in respect to the value of their exports during the quarter was as follows, viz.:— Otago .. ... £362,510 increase Hawke's Bay ... 23/7GG do. Canterbury 22,234 do. Nelson .. .. 10,193 do. Wellington 10,17-1 do. Auckland 5,839 do. Southland 2,783 do. Marlborough 4,273 decrease. Some explanation is required in reppect to Wellington and Hawke's Bay, and .Nelson and Marlborough. The exports from Wellington and Napier do not correctly denote the relative positions of the two Provinces, a:id the same remark will apply to Nelson and Marlborough. The anomaly arises from the fact that the chief item of export in each of these cases being wool, it becomes a matter of convenience. as to which port it shall be shippedjfrom, Hawke's Bay wool being sometimes shipped from Wellington, and Marlborough wool from Nelson. j
The chief item of export from the Colony was gold, of which 82,862 ozs., value £321,092 were exported during the Quarter, nearly the whole of which was from Otago. Woo! comes next, the exports of which were 4,254,9831b5., value £297,203. Chrome ore figures as a comparatively new feature in New Zealand exports, of which £8,644 worth was exported during the Quarter. The other items do not call for special remark.
