WOMEN ON THE DIGGINGS. (To the Editor of the OTAGO DAILY TIMES.)

Sib—lt wns with-great surprise and indignation, that I read the evidence given by Detective Howard, in an assault case, tried at the Supreme Court on Monday last, October 20, wherein he states that ail females on the diggings are of loose character. Never was there a more foul slander ever uttered, r for to ray certain knowledge there are plenty of movfc respectable females on Tuapeka and | Diggings, and I only feel surprised that Detective ! Howard should have made use of such expressions. We all know amongst a large population all cannot be good—even look to your good city Dunedin, and are all the respectable ladies of chat city to be calumniated because there are some frail ones 1 I have a wife and daughters in Victoria that intend coming here shortly, but I tbinkitwill be rather doubtful if tliey will come to me at the diggings if they should happen to see Howard's statement, for fchey would according to his ideas, be considered loose as soon as they made their appearance here.

I should think Howard is not a married man. or ne would have been moie circumspect in his language towards the fair ccx. From -what I can under tn^rt h« will meet with a kind reception from the respectable females when lis shews his face here, - If you will be kiad enough to find space for this in your journal you will greutly oblige, " . Yours truly, T . m James Fisher. Junction, Tuapeka, October 25,15G2.
