' Yesterday, George Lloyd, E-;q.. J.P., Messrs J.M. and A.S.Baird, and G. Lay field, waited upon his Honor the Superintendent, us a deputation from the inhabitants of West Hawkesbury (Wai-"" kouniti), to present the following numsrbuslysigm i memorial, drawn up and adopted by a large public meeting of the iniiabitants of Waikouaiti and neighborhood, held in Wooley's .Beach Hotel :— •' To his Honor the Superintendent of Otago. "The respectful memorial of residents in the village of West Ilawkesbury and others, " Sheweth,— " That whilst in the proclaimed township of East Hawkesbury there are only one store, one private dwelling, and the police Station ; in the village of West Ilawkesbury (commonly called Mr Jones's private township), there are forty houses, and many framed tents, of which two are licensed hotels, six houses of accommodation, and twelve stores or shops, and there are also one church, and oue public school. " That all the traffic of the surrounding country land, of a great extent of pastoral country, and the Highlay diggings, as well as much of that of the Dunstan diggings centres in or passes through this village. " That in consequence of its not being a legal township, several Ordinances whose operation is important to the welfare of the village cannot be enforced. " That it is very necessary that the inhabitants of West Hawkesbury should have jjowcr to levy rates and for other improvements. " Your memorialists therefore respectfully request your Honor to submit to the Provincial Council an Ordinance constituting the village of West Ilawkesbury a legal township, and establishing a Town Board in the same. " And your memorialists will ever pray, &c, &c." His Honor promised to lay it before the Execu- ' :ve —it was a'matter requiring careful consideraon—as the decision would be quoted as a prececnt. The deputation should have an early ,ply.
