Port Chalmers, October 30, 1862, 2 a.m. Arrived, this evening, brigantine Yarra, from Auckland, and ketch Pride, from Timaro. Tcarra left Auckland on 18th. Brings news up to that date. Governor returned from Wellington on 16th having left on 10th. Native affairs reported to be then of pacific aspect. . ! Sir Malcolm M'Grcgor, commander of Harrier, promoted, and superseded by Captain Sullivan. Nothing fresh or definite from Coromandel. Three new mining companies formed; but demand for shares—quiet. Machinery in course of erection on Keven's claim, and 120 ounces gold, hand-crushed, brought into town. Assay of one specimen gave 7 ounces 14 dwts per ton« Limited labor afforded at £3 per week in wet sinking, and £2 10s. in dry. Weather, bad. Albert Land settlers making slow progress to the settlement by two routes. Conveyance, difficult and expensive. '
Chamber of Commerce had held meetings on Panama route. Sentiments of meeting and of press antagonistic to Otago. Deputations to wait on Government and obtain views. Revenue tables for Quarter ending June 30th published. Revenue from imports over New Zealand, £87,942, against £55,226 for same quarter in 18GI. Receipt for gold exports, £10,000. In Customs revenue, New Plymouth shows decrease, Auckland stationary, others slight increase, luvevcagill double, Dunedin fourfold. Favourable balance sheet and improved premiums of Bank of New Zealand expected. j Fiincipal local events were a Volunteer Bazaar, launch of barque « Novelty," said to be the finest in New Zealand, and social festivals af first settiers. Rita, Sea Shell, and Sylph, had arrived from Dunedin. Sylph lost jib and jib-boom on passage, and Rita damaged at Auckland wharf during gale on lOfch. insfc.
