WATER-COLOR PAINTINGS OF OTAGO

SCENERY. Four very pretty ; water-color sketches of Ifetv Zealand (Ot.igo) scenery, have just been completed by Mr Thomas Wright, of the Back Creek. No. I,' represents the Tafara Plains, whie'i have to be crossed on the road to, and not many miles from Tuapeka. No. 2, gives us the mouth of the Clutha in the distance,, the sketch being taken from a tributary creek of that riwr. The formidable breakers on the coast, are artistically introduced. The luxuriant vegetation along the banks of the creek, is also depiefe 1 with a bold hand, and, taken in conjunction with a.sky still threatening but just on the point of yielding to the genial lnflunce of the sun, produces a most p!easin°eileet. Indeed, we are inclined to give the \nilm (o tliis picture. In the third we have a view of the Waitahuna River, so faithfully drawn that all the returned emigres to the land of promise, but not of performance, at onca recognise tho truth fulnei-s of the resemblance. Into this picture is introduced, with considerable efivct, a sleet storm in (h•• neighboring mountains. This too .will be acknowleilcecfas quite jn/piaw hy such as have iodul-ed in the luxury of admiring New Zealand scenery at the exoense of their pockets. Of tho fourth and coiiclmlin-' r.v-ture of the series, which, repn-sents the Woo'slnd'Creek! we leave (lie public to jnd-e for tlioinsc'.ws. ineiviy remarkiuff that the details are more clnb->rat?lv woriced out than in the o« Jilts. (T,, ou the whole, we stron-ly commend Mr \Vn>ht'<» lubru-cat-ons to general notice. They ar«, we observe, to be exlawsed at the Criterion Hotel, iVeo of c- !a"g-\ previous to removal to \!r Norton's g'd ep -m AEelboume. Mr. Wri s ht, we m.ay conclude XSp''^,^'l,l6'l l" SOW medal in 1852, fjr a couple n^'l 0.? °r<lriUVl'ss wpr^ntinj? scenery iv the Daudenong rangos. Mr \Vri»ht also paints i-i oils, but we are mij !le d to the belief thru, hi* iHme, s lnuld r® 10?'" will besreured chiefly b y an uuher-
