ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.
THE LATE ACCIDENT TO THE ALDINGA. (7*o the Editor of Vie Dailt Times.) Deab Sib,—During my absence I find that a memorial has been drawn up and presented to the Government, relative to lighting the coast, particularly a light on Dog Island, Foveaux Straits. Since then, vhe Aldinga, commanded by one of the most carefal and experienced seamen in these waters, has touched on a knoll between Slope and Waipapa Points, from four to five miles offshore. Were there a first-class light on Dog Island, no suck. aci-Ment could possibly occur, lhere is the Toby Hock, that only breaks in heavy weather on the other side of the Straits, and to avoid which masters of vessels are apt to borrow on the northern shore. ] With those dangers on either side, a first-class light on Dog Island, as a guide through the Straits, is imperatively required. Trusting that the Government 3 will tnke immediate steps in this most important ' matter, < j I remain, yours respectfully, ( John 51'Lachlan, j \ . Steam-ship Omeo. ' AugUßt 29th, 1862.
