The Margaretna Roesner, coal-laden from Newcastle, is at the Heads, waiting favorable wind. In addition to her cargo, which is consigned to Mr. M'Kinnon, she brings 49 passengers, and Capt. Eggers states that he could have obtained a great many more if he had had the accommodation. Some heavy weather was encountered on the passage. By the courtesy of Captain Eggers, we have Newcastle files to the 6th instant.

The W. B. Dean, with cattle from Wellington, reached the Port at mid-day. Lett on the 18th, had some heaw weather from the S.W. off BankVs Pegnsnla, and out of her freight has lost six head. he brings a mail from Wellington. The Star of Tasmania which was lately driven on the beach at Oamaru, was got off successfully on Saturday, by being hove down on wa^s constructed for the purpose, and has returned to the Port to. receive any juecessary repairs. Though twice driven up and exposed to a very heavy surf, she has not received each serious damage as mi.^ht have been expected. The Geelong, Lyttelton, Lady Barkly, and Planet, were to-day crowded with passengers for Waikouaiti, on the way to the Dunstan diggings. There was just standing loom for them in the case of each vessei, and it is presumed that they must have conveyed an aggregate of from 500 to 600 persons. As the steamers passed among the shipping in Port, or left the side of the jetty, cheer aft*r cheer was given by the passcngere, and in one instance the party were accompanied by a small band of music. Krom thirty to forty persons joined the crowd at Port Chalmers.

.Nearly all the vessels m the harbour are being deserted by their crews, who are rushing madly off to the new diggings aud several ships which were preparing for sea will have difficulty in petting away. During day aacl night time the men are escaping from their yes els by smuggling ashore, or boldly taking the ship's boats and making for the mowt convenient landing- place. With an increased number of vessels here it will be highly necessary to strengthen the number of the -water police force, who were some months ago reduced to a minimum, in keeping with the lessened amount of business done at the Fort. Since Sunday night quite a hot wind has blown, from the N.W., and the face of the country has been covered by a peculiar haze resembling the atmosphere of thehot wind season in Victoria. At night time also, for three or four nights consecutively, a bright glare in the sky has been visible to the northward, and it isaiot improbable that' some extensive bu9h fire has been raging. Several small bush fires were seen about the Molyneux by the City of llobart and the Margaretha Roesner. A largo vessel is reported as having been seen from the Heads, shortly after the arrival of the Margaxetha Roesner. It is possible the Ringdove or the Grasmere, but the wiud being light and off the land, it will be some time before she can get in.
