BRUTAL ASSAULT AND RAPE AT TUAPEKA.
Cfhom our own correspondent.) On Wednesday evening, as a man named Monck was accompanying a Mrs. Smith from Wetherstone's to her tent in- Gabriel's Gully, they were suddenly set upon by three men, and Monck shockingly maltreated. One of his arms is broken, and his head and face are fearfully bruised. The blows, it appears, were dealt with a heavy stick, and were continued long after the victim was insensible. They, then proceeded to assault the woman in an indecent manner, and after a struggle they effected their object.
Information was given to the police, and from the clear description of - them by the woman, they were arrested in their tents this morning by Sergeant Cleary and Detective Howard.'' The men are Irishmen, and their names are Maloney, Kenney and Brogan. They were brought before Major Croker, E.M., during the day, and were remanded to Saturday next, for the evidence of Mrs. Smith, who is at present too ill to attend the Court.
