INVERCARGILL.

(?ROM OUR OWM CORRESI'ONDBST.) Invercargill, Bth August, 1862. Mr. Green, the late agent of the Union Bank hefre, left last week for Melbourne, per the Aldinga, rery generally regretted. It was! intended to present him with a silver cup filled with sovereigns before he left. The cup was sent for to Dunedin, but did not arrive by the Guiding Star before Mr, Green left; it will be sent after him ; the inscription on the cup is "Presented to W. J.- Green, Esq., of the Union Barfk of* Australia, Invercargill, not o*ly as a token of respect and esteem, but of regret at his departure."

Our Provincial balance keeps up well. On the! Ist cf last month we had L 17.080, added to oar! credit ; on the first instant, the balance in our favor was L 16,330 ; daring July the expenditure was L5,51§ odd. An expenditure of more than L 66,000 a year, ia not trifling for a young Province, and yet the balance is scarcely diminished. The Land fund for last month was in round numbers L 3.445. The customs for InTercargill done (which is not included in the revenue for the month) is £662 ; this looks ridiculously small to Dunedin eyes, but in comparison to the corresponding month of last year which was £378, it shows a healthy increase which is likely to continue. ' The rush to the Wak>itip diggings has already svt in; by last reports there wero sixty, and every day makes addition. Several parties have started v .thin the last week from Invercargill, «ome with tjrays, and many more are making arrangements for leaving soon.

An eight-horse waggon left last Thursday, loaded with provisions to start a store. Mr. Roger's dray also must have- arrived ere this at the diggings, so thaf those willing to give the grounds Mr trial, will not be driven off for want of the necessaries of life. Mr. David M'Kellar brought down last Saturday about two pounds two ounces of gold from the Wakatip, given into his charge by Corporal Morton, who bad just arrived at his station from the diggings. The weather, though fine, has been cold^nd seems inclined to take a milder view of it y spring has seemingly set in, bushes have begun to sprour, and nature evidently wishes to look green; the days also are sensibly lengthening, and the wind, which of late we,began to class amongst the things that were, so calm has it been, seems inclined to come to our assistance in drying up the roads which have been cut up by tfie Irost.

The snow rivers will rise shortly from the melting cf the large quantities of snow which has fallen this winter on the higher hills, at their sources. Great caution should be exercised by strangers crossing them, either on foot or with drays; on the 28th of hist month, a person crossing the Mataura, above M'Gibbon's, with" a dray and two horses, mistook the ford, and was nearly drowned; the shaft horse was drowned, the leader and cart with difficulty saved, the contents being carried down . the river and lost, amongst which was a carpet bag, containing a considerable sum of money. People coming from Otago should be careful not to cross unless assured that it would be safe to do so, by some one thoroughly acquainted, not only with the fords, but also the state of the river.

The coroner, Dr. M'Clure, returned after holding the inquest on Captain Tibbet's body yesterday evening. The verdict, as expected, was " Justifiable homicide."

The Australian, from Melbourne, is in. The Guiding Star came up to the Jetty to-day, about 10 a.m.

The dearth of 6ubjec<s for a leader in our weekly paper has induced the editor, under the excuse of getting up a healthy political excitement, to suggest the propriety "of turning out the present, Executive ; though a short time ago the Southland News was congratulating the Province on the able and efficient manner in which it was governed. Tiiis suggests to one's mind one of those interesting facts inculcated in early life, at the mother's knee, that " The devil finds some mischief still for idle hands to do."
