It still continues to blow very stiffly from th-? X, E., and a number of small vessels outwanl bound are detained in consequence, one of the number, the Rebecca, remaining half-way. down the channel. The Cosmopolite was towed down by the Samson in the forenoon, against the stiff head wind prevailing. The Time and Truth tows down on the weather favoring.' The Geelong returned from Oamaru in the forenoon, having successfully landed "hor passengers at. all the, different harbors, .notwithstanding the heavy sea prevailing along the coast. At Oamaru, however Captain Boyd was oulv able to land part of the goods shipped for that place, and the Geelong lost one of her anchors. The Star of Tasmania still lay on the beach at Oamaru. There was no very strong wind along the coast, but a-heavy ground swell throwing up a bad surf on the beach. * Some fresh sets of harrows have been manufactured tor the Harbor Department, to be used in breaking up the sand bank lately formp.l in the channel inside of the Heads. Tne first attempt by the Samson was not found to be so effective as was expected and it is hoped that these harrow*, improved as'thev have been, compared with their original construction will produce a better result when brought to bear upon the bank. Those who have resided in the province for some years, and shipmasters familiar with the coast descries the present season as' beiner characterised to quite ?.«, unusual degree by the prevalence of northSi Y?%f S'- t lnstead of the ordinary southerly wi a. the winter, we Ir ye had north-east winds both frequent, long, and strong. The sam 3 has been the .experience oi vessels pacing through the same latitudes, and to this fact may be attributed the le^/-PJ^ e| °, f % vessels which f,ave lately arnved m Yew Zealand from the home country, and of those which are known, to" be now on their way
