Resi)ecting Deserters from the Array and Navy. Attorney- General's Office, Auckland, sth April, 1862. FREQUENT instances having occurred of Desertion from Her Majesty's Sea and Land Forces in this Colony, Notice is hereby given, that the most rigorous proceedings "will be taken against any person enticing away, harboring, concealing, or employing Deserters. The enactments relating to the above offence are subjoined for information. FRANCIS D. FEXTON, Assistant Law Officer. CLAUSES OF IMPERIAL ACTS RELATING TO DESERTERS. Naval Dbsertioit. 10 and 11 Viet., chap. 62, sec. 11. And be it enacted, That every person who, by words or any other means whatsoever, shall persuade any person in Her Majesty's Navy to desert, or improperly absent; himself from his duty, shall forfeit and pay the sum ot" twenty pounds for every such act• and every person who shall assist or procure any •• person in Her Majesty's Navy to desert, or improperly absent himself from his duty ; or shall conceal employ, or continue to employ any person belonging to Hu Majesty's Navy, who shall be a deserter, or improperly ab.-ent from his duty, knowing him to be such a desertor, or so improperly absent, shall forfeit and pay the sum of thirty pounds for every such assistance, procurement, concealment, employment, or continuing of employment, as aforesaid." Marine Desertion. 21 Viet., cap. 7, sec. 54. " Any person who shall, in any part of Her Majesy's dominions, by words or any other mean 3 whatsoever, direcdy or indirectly, procure any Marine to desert; or sniall by words or by any other means whatsoever, attempt to procure or persuade any Marine to desert; and any person who, knowing that Marine is :iLout to desert, shall aid or assist him in deserting; or, knowing any Marine to be a deserter, «hall conceal such deserter, or aid or assist such 'eserter in concealing himself, or aid or assist in his rescue, shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and shall, on conviction thereof, be liable to be Eunished by fine or iinprisontaent, or both, as the !ourt before which such conviction shall take place may adjudge. Military Desertion. 21 Viet., cap. 9, Sec. 83. " Any person who shall, in any part of Her Majesty's dominions, or by any means whatsoever, directly or indirectly, procure any Soldier to desert, or attempt to procure or persuade any Soldier to desert, and any person who, knowing that any Soldier is about to desert, shall aid or assist him in deserting ; or, Knowing any Soldier to be a deserte, shall conceal such deserter, or aid or assist such deserter in concealing himself, or aid or assist in his rescue, shall be aeemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and shall, on conyistion thereof, be liable to be punished by fine or imprisonment, or both, as the Court before which such conviction shall take place may adjudge. The names of candidates, together with certificate: o their age, must be sent in to the Principal at an; time not later than the 22nd of September. Candi dates must attend in person at the College, on Wed nesdav, the 24th of September, at 9*30, a.m., to bi examined on that and the following days. Subjects of Examination. Candidates for the first Scholarship will be ex amined in Scripture History, Geography, Arithmetic and in writing English from Dictation: those win pass a satisfactory examination in those subjects wil i>» further examined in— 1. Latin and Greek Grammar. 2. Cicero, the Catiline Orations, 1., 11. 8. Xenophon's Anabasis, Book I. 4. Algebra, as far as Quadratic Equation* 5. Euclid, Books 1., 111. 6. Roman History to the end of the Punic wars 7. Greek History to the end of the Persian wars 8. English History. 9. French Grammar, translation from Englisl into French, and from French into English. Candidates for the second Scholarship will be '.ex.amined in Scripture History, Geography, Arithmetic writing English from Dictation, Lathi Grammar Jacob's Latin Header, Eufciopius, and English History. Candidates for the third Scholarship will be ex amined in Scripture History, Geography, writinj English, from Dictation, Latin Accidence, Englisl History and Arithmetic. The Sehoiurships will be awarded to the three boyi who do best in the three several examinations. On the Ist of May, 1863, five Scholarships will bi offered for competition, viz., two Foundation Scholar ships of £20 and £10 respectively, the Station Scholarship of £20, the Iticlunond Scholarship £30, and the Newcome Scholarsliip of £30.
