FIRE! FIRE! FIRE!

{To the Editor of the Daily Times.)

Sir, —Another of these malignant visitations, anil another narrow escape of the destruction of a large amount of property lias taken place, and still we see no steps taken by the authorities to - establish a Brigade, and provide efficient means to secure us from the fury of the devouring element. After the destructive fire -which occurred at Mr. Cargill's store, some months since, I certainly thought that something Tvonld have been done for the protection of the city ; tut that and others have occurred since, without arousing the apathy of those concerned. With all these miraculous escapes, will no one make a more in the desired direction ?

Would it not be policy for the merchants or insurance companies, who are the nearest interested, to use their exertk-as to establish a " Volunteer Fire Brigade,'' such as have been ?ormed on the gold fields and provincial towns in Victoria, the expense of maintaining which would be very trifling, might be easily raised by subscription, or defrayed by the insurance coinpaniess. I am quite certain there are numbers who, like myself, -would be happy and willing to join in such a movement if the preliminary steps were at once taken. I trust you, Mr. Editor, will once more wield your pen in support of what I feel certain will be the means, eventually, of saving from destruction a large amount of property, and probably the lives of human beings.

I am, Sir, your 3 &c, • A Volunteer Fireman Dunedin, Btli August, 1862.
