Tbe Geelong, from London, has arrived, bringing a large cargo of general merchandise. This being the dullest season of the year, we have very little of interest to chronicle. Tlie Melbourne Herald of July 21 contained the following remarks upon the 'Melbourne import market:—" Although during the week a moderate amount of trade has been doing, few features of special interest are noticeable. For the present the feeling of speculation with respect to American goods has completely subsided, nl though if there wore anything to justify tho excitement wliich has lately provailed on the subject, nothing has since occurred to warrant re-action. The following report upon the market for tobacco, supplied to us by Mr. W. Kent Hall, indicate.? such a perspective scarcity of tion article as to reasonably induce the belief tint present prices will at least be maintained. Mr. Hall says:--' The arrival of the last mail found tho tobacco market firm at higher quotations than have yet appeared on the price list. The success of the Federal arms in the States have, however, canned many to conclude that there will be a speedy end of the war, and acting under this belief, several hohl.-rs have placed their parcels on the market, but hem" mostly of inferior quality have not found buvcr" Holders of prime quality have not changed their figures, nor will they accept anything less than the prices ruling last week. Only one small parcel of 40 packages is advised of as being shipped since the previous mail. The immense destruction of 8,000 tons of tobacco in' New Orleans is only the initiative of the determined policy the Confederates will pursue as to their staples, if pressed too close by their' enemies, so that there can possibly be no hope of any conquered place that can place cotton and tobacco in the hands of the Federals. I referred several months since to the very probable fact that there would be no crop planted this year: the latest news brings positive information to this effect—such an ■ occurrence even in the ordinary course of trade is sufficient to enhance prices 50 per cent. As there have been many assertions made that the stocks in the colonies are sufficient for 12 or 18 months' consumption, I submit the fallowing reliable statistics for the perusal of there interested, and from which they can make their own deductions. The stock being nearly all concentrated m—
