A CRANE AT THE JETTY.

To the Editor of the Otago Daily Times,

Sir, —Is it not a curious fact tliat tlie imaginations of our harbor aiid jetty authorities do not suggest the necessity of haying a crime or winch iit the end of the jetty for .the lifting of heavy goods that are hourly being landed at the wharf. There was at one time a people who did not believe in tlie crane, and I really think that there are .some of those very people amongst ■ us. If you have time, sir, just go down to tliat wharf at any hour of the day, and witness the " mighty strength" exhausted, and the tyiie wasted, in lifting the heavy goods that arrive. Why it is a job for six or eight men and half an hour's labor to lift about any ordinary heavy package, -whereas with a crane the same work is done by two men in three minutes. Perhaps this' will be put right when the new jetty works are completed, but if that time were only a month hence (in place of twelve months, the time I tbink they will be finished) let a temporary crane be put down at once. If you have any influence in such a matter, sir, pray use it. I am, &c, A.B.C. Jnne 13, 1862.,
