Original Correspondence.
To the Editor of the Otago Daily Times,
Sir, —Knowing your rjadiness at all times to assist in bringing any matter before the authorities and the public, that tends to the comfort and safety of the community, allow me to offer a few remarks on what has, I think, been neglected too long : namely,- the necessity of establishing a Steam Navigation Board. We have now no less than twelve steamers, large and small, plying in and about the Port, and I must say that some of them have been carrying passengers and property when they were a disgrace to the owners and ail concerned, the boats not only beiug unsound ia hull, boilers, and machinery, but carrying a much larger number of passengers than would he allowed in any other part of the colonies, if they were in good working order. I therefore think, sir, that you will agree with me, that it is time this evil was remedied. I remain, sir, yours, &c, ' HujtAHlir.
