THE HIGHWAY DIGGINGS.

A gveat many miners have returned from AVaikouaiti, some having been to tiie Highlay Diggings, some having turned back on the road' The reason of tho people leaving is the severity of the weather and the absence of fusl. There appears to be very little doubt that a gold field has been found, hut it can scarcely be worked to any extent during the winter. AYe are told that there are three or four feet of snow, and the only fuel is coal procured at a distance of several mites. Those alluvial miners, who are able to work are said to ba doing very well, and the general appearance of the country leads to the belief that there will be a large rush there in the spring, an:!, perhaps, if the weather be moderate, a limited population will be located there during the winter.
