We take the following from the Southern Cross summary of May 9 :— Liquids.—Bottled beer scarce; but large stocks advised to arrive. ■ Hum and bulk beer are in heavy stock. Bulk porter is in good supply, with .additions to arrive ; but as it will go more largely into consumption in winter than ale, the market is not likely to be over-bunlened. Geneva, in case, is scarce. No alteration in brandy; wine in good supply, with a quiet family trade. Additions to the stocks of wines are on the way. Tea. —Some old stocks have been disposed of at low prices during the month. Good despriptions arc scarce, but plenty of middling and inferior, i Coffee in demand, but the consumption has hitherto been limited. ■ Sugar.—We have little change to-report in sugar. Company's sugar is scarce, and there does not seem to be a disposition to keep large'stocks cf it in the market. Unmixed'Company's sugar is always saleable.,, Mauritius is in heavy stock, and dull of sale, owing no doubt to the quantity in the market. Candles.—Large stocks, with heavy consignments to iirrivo. The prices are kept up o:i account of the deniaud for the approaching winter. ■ Ironware.—The trade in ironware is of a retail character. The market is well supplied with every article in the house furnishing branch, and considerable competition exists in that line. Heavy-iron- in light demand, and stocks quite adequate to the ■' requirements of the trade. Builders'ironware is well; supplied.' - .-• , ."'-.' Glass and Dclfware'is in demnnd. Well assorted stocks nre not to bo found ; but tho invoices by the hist mail promise to make good any deMciency. Only retail transactions are done in this commodity, which ia of less value here--than in Sydney. Oilmen's Stores are generally plentiful; but pickles are in request, and command full prices. , Soft Goods. —A good business has been done in winter clothing.
