Storm Bird, s.s., from Wellington . ' Albatross, schooner, from Auckland ( ' Dunedin, schooner, from Wellington Glenshee, barque, from Newcastle ( Guiding Star, s.s.,from luvercargill. The Guiding Star, screw steamer, arrived here from InvercargiU this morning, and has since been beeched for the purpose of receiving a new propeller, and an • overhaul Beports the arrival of the Time and Truth at Bluff Harbor, with 2500 sheep, which had ■ been conveyed to Irivercargill by the paddle-steamer Aphrasia. • Tlie Prince Albert, Alilrcd mnster, had sailed from InvercargiU for Hobart Town and Liun- . cestcn, on the Bth inst. The schooner Colonist which recently arrived from "Glasgow," has discharged her cargo in good order , and is now to" be disposed of, for employment . in the colonial coasting- trade. Having been - built specially for that trndcj this fine little vessel, should she hail from the Port of Otago, will \ prove a great acquisition to the increasing num , ber of our coasting craft. Her voyage out from home J was a very successful one, proving her to possess firstrate sailing qualities, and, for the quantity of cargo she is capable of carrying, she hiis but a light draught of water,'suiting her udmirably for coasting traffic. , for which she is, in other respects, adapted. Having ' • teen launched from one of the best building" yards on the Clyde, she is alsp most complete in her fittings, being furnished with- standincr rigging of wire, rope and sails of Gourock manufacture, and all the most modern appliances 'on and beneath ■ .decks, llor registered tonnage is 205, dimensions 76 feet in length, by 20 feet of beam,- proportions which fit her well for coasting, and yet did not inter-! fere with her making, to her own credit and that of • Captain M'Fic, a voyage out which can compare nausfactorily with the passages of several recent arrivals from the old country. At present she is lying at Dunedin, but is not likely to remain long without lieing employed as a regular trader between this and one or other' of the New Zealand or Australian An official visit is, we understand, soon to be made to the rivers Taieri and Clntha, for the purpose of inspecting improvements of-the navigation which ■ "Are now in progress, or of suggesting others which may - still -be required. The principal improvement nt the Taieri is the removal of the bar at the entrance to the Waihola Lake. By the removal , jjr diminution of. this bar, small steam vessels and ■'*tbers will obtain easy accessto the Lakej and .will s thus be able tb:accommodate the trade of a yery extensive district. In the case of the Clutha, the upper rsaches of the river have as yet been only very par- ' tially prospected with1 a view: totheir facilities/for "'navigation, 'and a knowledge of: these facilities is essential now 'that it is contemplated* to- render the other parts of the river navigable for steamers, and that tae resources of the district through: which the ' river flows have been so immensely developed. ; . I From car Wellington correspondent's letter we hear that the Avenger, bound from Otago to Sydney, was lost with all hactW outside Wellington Heads in the storm on the 21st April: ■■-■ ." 'The Hewßiver.—lt has often been alleged by 'tTiose '- whose wish is father to the thought,".that the New River can never be a port for any, other. ;■■, than vesselsof very light draught and inconsiderableburthen; that no-vessel'drawing more than 8 feet cancome up • nearer the town than what is called the deep water anchorage, where the larger inter-colonial steamers used to bring too and stop. -The brig Mary Ann, now.. lying alongside the Jetty, some ten minutes'walk from' the Custom House and Tay and Dee-streets, affords a strikin" test of the accuracy of these statements. She ' is a brig of the first-class, and draws wichin an inch or two often feet; yet she found the channel of the "- New River quite deep enough to allow her to'come up ••with perfect ease and safety, and, as we have said, to. lie close alongside the Jetty.—Southern JVews, May 10, •' " • '• ■- '
