1 The Criminal Sessions will commence : this morning at 11 o'clock, and on the succeeding days at 10. During the month of April, there have arrived at the port of Otago from ports not in New Zealand, G42 adult males ; 261 adult females ;. 106 male and 100 female children in all 1115. The departures, to foreign ports for the same period word 2074 adult males ; 19 adult, females ; 9 male and 8 female children, in all 2110, showing a 1 balance against the Province of 995. By a telegram from Sydney which is reproduced in the Hobart Town Mercury, we karn that it has .been finally determined to make New Caledonia a penal settlemont.

We have received a letter signed "A Waitahuna Digger/ but as it was not authenticated by the name of the writer we are compelled, in accordance with our our usual rule to exclude it. We take this opportunity of again stating, that we can insert no letters which are not authenticated by the names of the writers, not necessarily for publication, but as a guarantee of good faith.

A general meeting of the members of the Dunedin Garrick Club was held at the Provincial Hotel, on Tuesday evening. There was a very large attendance of members, and the financial affairs of their performance in aid of tho funds of the Benevolent Asylum were satisfactorily settled. The cash receipts &} thp door of tho Theatre amounted to £gd 9s Qd, and; the sum of £G5 7s was collected for sale of tickets—making a total of £153 16s Gd. Against this a.: ount appeared the sum of £89 9s, expenses incurred for the performance, as follows :—Hire of theatre, £60 ; printing, advertising, and posting, £19 7s; cheque tnkers^£4 v; and incidental expenses attending rehcajsal and performance, £6 2s. The treasurer was instructed to forward the balance, £64 7s 6d, to the Committee of the Benevolent Asylum. In addition ,to this sum there tire forty or fifty tickets not yet paid for, t-he money for which will be given to the Benevolent. Asylum when collected. * A general feeling of satisfaction was expressed as to the position of the Club, and the success attending its formation. All the ofllccrs having resigned, the meeting proceeded to the nomination and election •of permanent office bearers. Major Richardson was 'nominated 'and elected as patron and President of the Club, and a1 > strong wish expressed by the members that that gentlemen would 'accept the the office' It was mentioned that Sir Henry Barkly was President of the Garrick Club in Melbourne, and that his accepting that position was the cause of. a much-larger sum accruing to the charities for which the members played than would otherwise have been the case. 'Mr. A. M'Landress was re-elected to the vice-president-ship, Mr. B. L. Farjeon treasurer, Mr. Mum ford secretary, and Mr. T. \V. Standwell stage manager. The election of five members to serve on the Committee, and a vote of thanks to the chair terminated the proceedings, and tho meeting adjeurned' until Tuesday evening next.
