It has for sometime been contemplated to have a regatta at Port Chalmers on some early and suitable occasion; and on Tuesday evening the .project took practical shape at a public meeting of the inhabitants held at the Port Chalmers Hotel. The meeting was n very numerously attended one, and the greatest unanimity prevailed as to its object, which it was determined to carry out on as grand a scale as possible. The Queen's Birthday was selected as the day for holding the regatta, and a variety.of proposals were, made as to the several boat races intended to constitute the programme of the day's proceedings. For the more perfect furtherance of the project, a committee of fifteen gentlemen was also appointed, who were empowered to communicate with others, whose • countenance it was considered desirable to have, and to receive subscriptions A good guarantee of the interest taken in the matter was afforded by those present at the meeting at once subscribing upwards of £50, to -which sum additions have since been made. Though ■ several ofthe most expert waterman residing at the Port are now absent, ; there are still some number of boats and men that will enter for si regatta, and with ships' boats, Maori boats, and boats and yachts-from town, a most attractive day's sport should, Without mucli difficulty, be organised. The St. Jean, barque, from Melbourne,; arrived at the Heads in the afternoon, and has since come, up to the Port, towed byj the Samson. Having only left Port Philip Heads on the 25th ult., the St. Jean has made rather a satisfactory passage. She brings a few cabin passengers, 68 in the steerage, and a small cargo consisting principally of bonded goods. By the courtesy of a passenger, we have a Melbourne Argus of the 24th, two days later than the latest date by the Egidia. The Jeanie Oswald, barque, and the Time-and-Truth, barque, for,Otago, were at Port Philip Heads on the 23rd. The Genii and the Hydra, from Otago, had arrived. The City .of' Hobart. continued to be advertised for the 29th April.
The brig Wild Wave, from -Hbbart Town, made the Heads on Tuesday-afternoon, and reached the Port early this morning.; She left Hobart Town on the 27th, and throughout the passage had a continuance of unusually heavy weather. In the course of a long experience of the colonial coasting trade, Captain Fisher has seldom or Bever bad a passage characterised by weather so unfavorable and severe. As a consequence of this weather, his freight of horses suffered severely, eleven out of sixteen having died. In addition to the horses, the Wild Wave has brought some fino specimens of Leicester sheep, with some building timber and other cargo. Brings Ilobart Town papers irj> to the 26th ult.
