Important.—o. Brown, Esq., of Taranaki, Las after many experiments, discovered that oil of tar forms a ready and cheap solvent for kauri gum.— Southern Cross. [TUhe essential oil which, as we stated in a former number, can be extracted from gum leaves, every hundred pounds of leaves yielding three pints of oil, is, we understand, an excellent solvent for all kinds of gums and resins, including kauri gum •and sanderie resin—the'resin of the Murray pine itrees.—Ed. Yeoman. In For It. —The best joke of the war recently appened in New York. A number of ambitious men endeavored to get up a regiment. All the officers, from colonel down to first lieutenant, were parcelled out, and then came the task of obtaining the men. To facilitate operations, and to obtain head quarters and rations at Government expense, the officers formed themselves into a committee, and were sworn into the United States service/ but they could get no recruits What was their horror to receive an order to march ai once to Washington, and join one of the skeleton regiments there! The colonels, majors, and captains had to go to the wars as privates, were sworn in, and could not help themselves. It is stated in Vlnvention, that an establishment has recently been erected in tlie plain of Gennevdhers, at which a windmill is employed to compress «r wj» loree iron reservoirs similar to steam toilers, and then this air is used to work engines for taving n^chinerv -The power of the wind is then stored up, to DC used when wanted,, and is broughHinder the most perfect oontrol.— Californian Farmer.
