NOVA SCOTIA GOLD FIELDS.

[From the Illustrated London News.]

Now that winter is approaching a large number of persons engaged in gold-mining in different parts of Nova Scotia are suspending their labors. Many, however, intend working through winter, and'are making arrangements for meeting the cold blasts. There is no doubt that many an industrious man has bepn disappointed in seeking for the precious article during the past season*• but the same reverses have been expeiiencerl in Australia and California. That money has been made by a large number there is no question ; it is impossible to estimate how much, for two out of three of the successful ones will keep their own counsel1; but in some instances sufficient has leakjd out to. show to the public that gold mining may be made a most profitable business in that province.' The Cunard Company, as it is called, Mr. 'William Cunard being the founder of the company, has been among the fortunate workers at the Ovens diggings. The stock consists of twelve shares of 400 dols. each. Operations by the company were not commenced until late in summer, from which until last week there were about a dozen men employed. One hundred and fifty put of about 400 bags of rich sand which had Veen-cradled, belonging to this company, arrived here last week. We have heard it stated that each biig will yield 400 dols. worth of gold. We cniinot vouch for the correctness of this estimate ; but one thing wo can vouch for, however, that the shareholders of the company are in spirits, and we heard one of them refuse 1,000 dols. for a half-share, which only cost him 200 dols. The schooner Lord Lyons arrived here yesterday from Isaac's Harbor. Her manifest at the Custom liouse contains the following entry:— '.Twenty-five bbls. of quartz and three bags of gold."— flalifax Chronicle.
