WAITAHUNA DEEP SINKING ASSOCIATION.
! (From a Correspondent.) ' A meeting of the members of this Association ' was held at the Church, Wnitahuna, on Friday j night, the 28th instant. Dr Samuels in the chair. The minutes of the last [evening's proceedings , having been read over, ( The Chairman rose and said he had called the t members together that evening for the purpose ol J transacting business, and also to hear a statement f of.the Commissioner respecting the funds pro ' mised by the Government. He need not tell the ' meeting, for he felt sure they were already aware ] of the fact, that they were deeply indebted to , Captain Baldwin for the interest he had taken * in the welfare of the association ; and for his pre- i sence that evening whim he was suffering from f ill health he deserved their bes-'. thanks. ! Captain Baldwin said that n report had lately t been circulated that the Government having made certain promises to the miners, did not in- 1 tend to carry them out. He was there that even- ;i ing to show thorn that such was not the case, and ' this he would uo in the best possible manner by H informing them that the sum of eighty pounds 1; for carrying out deep sinking had been lodged * by him to their crodit at the Bank of of New v Zealand. He would take this opportunity of in- t forming them that His Honor the Superintendent t had the interests and welfare of the miners at s heart, and was only too anxious to do every tiling f in his power for them. What were the promises c made by the Superintendent ? That the goldflckl 1; regulations would be revised ? This had already ~ been done. That townships would be laid off? They c would be surveyed, he believed, in the course of j next week. Tbat coal would be supplied the s miners ? Tenders had been accepted whereby i they would be provided with coal at the pit for about 9s or 10s a ton. But he was, he believed, o justified in saying that his Honor would not re- y strict himself to these promises, but would do !) whatever he considered would be for the benefit of the miners. fl Mr Morau said that three shafts had already ? been sunk, but had been unworked lately for want '' of timber. He hoped, now that the Government p had come forward to their support, that no further a time be lost in providing timber. ; ',. The Chairman wished to know if any member /; had a proposition to make, when it was proposed by Mr Moran, seconded by Mr Hodges, and n carried, " That another meeting of the members c! be called on Monday next, for the purpose of ) taking into consideration the appointing of men, " obtaining timber, and other matters of import- v' anee." a It was proposed by Mr Connolly, seconded by 5 Mr Hodges, and carried, "That the Sub-Com-mittee do in the interim take into consideration the regulations of the Deep Sinking Association ■ of Wetherstone's, supplied them by Capt. Bald- C win, and lay before the general meeting such of these rules, as might, iv the opinion of the Sub- f 1 Committee, be adopted with advantage. '■ The meeting, after a short desultory conversa- j, tion, terminated with a vote of thanks to the - r:hnirniiin and tn Ojinhim Rnlriwin.
