Hawke's Bat.—The Cask of the Shirley's.--The SouUurn Cross says :—" In our last, we stated thattlfe cattle belonging to Shirley had not been returned by the natives. We find we were m error. In the 'Haichtfs Bay Herald, of the 11th, is the following paragraph :—' We have been requested by the Messrs. Shirley to state that their cattle have not, as reported in our last, been delivered up by: the natives.' On the 11th the action for trespass wag t"i"d- and on the hearing of the case of set-off on the same day, Mr. Shirley gave the following testimony as to the return of the cattle :—'Several sows and heifers wer* in calf when taken away, I pointed this out to the natives at the time. Sixteen of the cattle have been returned to me ; one milk cow is still miss:in"; six calves during their absence. The cattle were all in good condition when taken away ; .they. are in vcrv poor condition now. The natives did not | attend to the cows properly. Some 01 the cows are ! ruined for this season. I considered them worth £8 a head when taken away, but don't think they are I worth more than £5 now. Seven were m full milk when they were taken away; they are nearly all dry now. The natives used to drive the cows with them to their work for the use of the milk. I had no other !cows; I depended mi them entirely for my subsistence.'"
